INCOME TAX
Sir,—lf lam not trespassing too much upon your valuable space, I would like' to make through your columns a suggestion regarding the exemption of ,£3OO incomo. from income tax. The provision already made in the Bill betore' the House is. a reasonable safeguard for married men with families, but if applied to single men without dependants it berximos the State's endorsement to an irresponsible, selfish, and luxuriant existence in war time. I would suggest' that the. <£30l) exemption be reduced to .£l5O, with further exemptions of .£IOO for wife and £'i~i for each child. Single men with dependants to be allowed further exemptions of ,£IOO for widowed mother, and £&h for each of her children under the ago limit dependant upon them, such further exemptions to be apportioned amongst the soub Who subscribe to. tho support of their mother and dependants, ■and who are subject to taxation.—l am, etc., C. T. REEVES. Wellington, July 1, 1916.
