N.C.O. APPOINTMENTS
HOW THEY CAN BE OBTAINED THIS MORNING'S! PARADE On Thursday Major Corrigan, Commander of No. 5 Group, forwarded the following letter to-n.c.o.'s who were waitins to be called up:-; "Owing to the number of candidates on lists for position, of probationary noncommissioned officers in tho Expeditionary Force being far in excess of demand, and such a small percentage are likely to be called up, the lists have been revised by the O.C.D. 'I am directed by liira to inform you that "your name is amongst those withdrawn from the'lists, and to add that as no doubt you are anxious to servo your country with the least possible delay, ■ you are advised, without waiting for selection as f1.c.0., to. accept the call for an early reinforcement draft. Please reply as to whether you agree to be transferred, and what month you nrc preparod to enter camp as a private. In the absence of such advice your name must be removed from tho register as-having recruited. lam further directed to state that all vacancies in camp for n.c.o. rank'are filled from the rank and file, and as euch pro. motions go. by'merit, you would have a good, chanco of promotion in camp to n.c.o. rank." Yesterday Major Corrigan received a dumber of replies from men who ha<d received tho abovo communication, protesting against being struck off the lists, and in some eases there' lias evidently been a misunderstanding in regard to tho first letter. ; Henoe Major Corrigan has replied to the letters received as follow "Regarding the above, and in further to my letter of yesterday,. I draw your attention to the following:— "On the recommendation of the Group Commander you were placed on the waiting last for., appointment as probationary n.c.o. in the N.Z. Expeditionary Force. As the waiting lists for tho district contained many more names than there are likely to be vacancies for, and' as so many appointments to n.c.o. rank are made in camp, the Officer Commanding tlw District considers it the fairer course to, strike off the list those who in all probability would not bo called as n.c.o/ ■in the near future. Your name, withothers, was consequently withdrawn, so: that , you might not delay in joining up_ as a private, and obtain the chance of early promotion in camp. The striking' out of any name does not infer unsuitability for n.c.o. rank, but the likelihood.' of not being called some considerable' time. Those who have been struck ■ off ■ the n.c.o. list, and who revert to the'dr-. dinary list (awaiting.call as privates), xcceivo any possible" prfeferenco in appoint-, ments to probationary n.c.o. vacancies which may occur before they arc aQtually called up. You will understand that the appointments. arc made by the Officer ■ Commanding .the District (Palmerston North), and it is i by his order that lists have'been so revised." Those men who have been waiting to be called up as n.c.o's, whether they have received tile abovo notification or not, are reminded that thoy are expected to pnrndo at tho Drill Hall, Buckle Street, at 10 a.m. to-day, . for inspection by Liout.-Col. M'Dcnald, General Staff Office. • .
