A' generous donation of tobacco ' was made to the Australian and New' Zealand soldiers by. 'an American firm', Messrs. Larus and Bro. Company, of Richmond, Virginia,. U.S.A.. 11l a letter to their local agents, Messrs. Vf. 11. Banuatyno anil Co., Ltd., they write as follows-.— "We shipped in February 32,000 packages of Edgeworth sliced plug and 100,000 Shirley cigarettes. AVc had considerable trouble in. getting this out of the .country, but it has' gone forward to Queen Alexandra's Field Force Fund, care Mrs. -Wm. Sclater, lion. secretary, 21a Hill Street, Kriightsbridge, London, with the distinct understanding that this tobacco is to be forwarded from .London to the Australian and New Zealand troops at the front. We sent this through the War Relief Association, of Richmond, Va. The tobacco is now on the _ other side, and, we hope, is being distributed as it was intended." In regard to the trouble in sending these jiacltages, the reason is that the. importation of tobacco into England is prohibited, but apparently the difficulty .was got over, seeing that the tobacco was a present to our troops.
News lias been received in Christchurch that Lieut. C. M.. Lewin, second son of Captain and Mrs. Lewin, of Methven, who vent to South i Africa during the Boer War with the Ist and Gth Contingents, and received a commission in the 10th Contingent,has recently received a commission in-the Australian Reiiiforceriients.He has been training for some time at-Duntroon Military College.
