BELGIAN CHILDREN'S FUND

COUNTRY SCHOOLS KEEN. There is every reason to believe that the effort of the schools of the Wellington district to raise funds for the impoverished Belgian children will result in a very substantial' amount being raised. The (lay for the special collection in (he schools throughout the whole of the-Wellington Education District has been fixed for Monday next., In this connection fne school children' have been instructed that though they may, under consent, broach their, money-boxes' or their-parents' purses, they must not beg in the streets for coin. , In the country the movement is being taken up with great vigour, and sheaves of letters have been receivoil by the secreMry of tho Education Board (Mr. G. L. Stewart) stating as much. In connection with the effort there is to- be a bi<j.produce fair in. the Town Hall on Jifly 27. and 28, when the contributions in kind will be sold 1 in aid of the fund. In that regard some of the chief committees in country centres havo undertaken.-to collect thu contributions of produce from the smaller schools in ' their districts, and forward same to Wellington. One country school coniinittco is organising a "rabbit drive," as the result of which they hope to send 50 pairs of rabbits to the fair. Jliss Harrison; of the Mauriceville School, has forwarded a'most, interestiii" copy of the London "Courier" ofApril 23, 1823 "(in .which is recorded wonderfully interesting: debates in jhe House of Parliament and House of/lords, including a speech by the Duke of Wellington), which is to bo sold for tlip lwriefit of the fund. Tho four-pago sheet, published at Td„ is in ah excellent stato of preservation. Other .schools promise jiares, and it is not improbable that there will be offerings of mutton. Live stock is barred.' ■Towards-the fund the secretary of tile board has already received tho following amounts \£ s. d. From Belgian_ Bund Committee 1000 0 0 From K-aliaufara School 25 0 9 From St. Anthony's Convent, ■ Pahiatuii 4 10 6 Total .£1029 11 3
