POULTRY NOTES

Answers to Correspondents, "H. 8.," Hustings, writes: (1) Can you give tne names aud -addresses of ilio ingnest competitors in tlie last egg-lay-lng test? U; L'ould you not give tne wuoletalo puces. o£ eggs in . Wellington in your column, so thai; wo .might know what to expect locally i W) Could you not give tne addressee oi competitors in the egg-laying test? (4.) At the same time I venture to remark that your suggestion in Just Saturday's column that tne American importation should have been met by lowering the local suppliers' prices seems to ine : .rather . unsound. ■There are in the Dominion, approximately lour million fowls; say. one-fourth of _ these only ,aro laying, it means a daily local supply of one million, eggs. To. lower the price of these by . even oue penny per dozen for one day would be a loss to suppliers of about .£4OO, And what effect would it have on the importer '( . Answer.—(l) Mrs. Mills,' Woodhauph, Dunedin; iliss Willis, Brighton Bom, Chrirtchurch, wero the winners .of the last competition. (2). We will arrange for the New Zealand-Poultry industries, Ltd., to give a: weekly Toport of the egg market. (3) It is hot fair to our adver-. tisers.for this to be done. (4) What we stated re tho egg. market has conie to pass. . The egg market has dropped Is. per dozen, so that in your computation the producers are losing £4800 daily. Your estimate' is too high. The last census 6hows three and a- half million birds in the Dominion. Of these quite one million would be males. At this time of : year one-tenth :would be laying, so that, tho daily loss would be much less. Our contention was sound. The local eggs were forced to,come down after many of the American-'egg6 had been placed. WELLINGTON SHOW FINAL' AWARD 'LISTS. The annual Poultry, Pigeon, and Can-' ary Show, which hii6 drawn excellent attendances, and which has' been a great success, was closed at 9 o'clock last evening. The judge of the utility poultry, stated that as a- whole the class had been the best out for a long time. The-util-ity breeders were certainly working along right lines in all classes, both as regards utility and stock. The Black Orpington cocks and hens were good classes, the cocks being oxcellent quality. • The Minorcas were, however, the best class ?rrt the -show, while Silver and White ttyaudottes were only of moderate quality. The winning White Leghorn cock was a really good bird, and the same remark applied to the pullets which were the best seen for some years Brown Leghorn cocks were of fair qual}i'u" J Vn re also the Rhode Island Reds, lhe following were the winners of specials in the AVofking Homer Pigeons Best bird in 100' and SOfl-niile class: A Lamb.
