WAR BONUS PROPOSAL

Christchurch, July 5. ; At to-day's meeting of the Lyttelton 'Harbour - Board, the Harbour Improvement, Committee recommended, in view 'of the greatly increased cost of living, that'a war bonus be granted to tho staff, •payable as'-an- increase in salary until March; ■ 1317, in accordance with the following scale:—Salaries; of Xl5O and under;, 10 per cent, of salary; salaries of -Sls! up to .C2OO, 7J, per, cent.; salaries of .©Ol up to .£350, 6 per cent.; salaries of .£351 up to .iSBOO, 5. per cent.; salaries of oGGOI and oyer, i per cent. , Tlie chairman moved .tho adoption of tho clause.'
; Mr. Allison said the sliding scale .adopted by the committee was unfair for 10 per cent, on ,8150, a salary'which needed increment in : these days, was less than 4 per cent, on j!600, a salary which did not need it. He moved' an amendment that a return be prepared showing tho payments proposed to bo made in each case to the various members of tho .board's staff., and that the board, before making the proposed increases, consider each individual, case on its morits.
IV Hon. R. Moore, SIX.C., supported Mr. Allison. He did not think, generally speaking, that this was a time to increase wages. The amendment was. carried by six votes to five, and the matter was'referml back to the committee.
