TEE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS [By Glencoe.l Despite his success in the June Steeples at Hastings, tho now ownor of Sum Pan is apparently not elated with the gelding, as he is not engaged at Trentham or I'iccarton in the principal events, but lio is entered for (lie Beaufort and Lincoln Steeples at tho C.J.C. meeting., Several Iticcarton trainers are making arrangements to leave for Trontham this week. I!. Longley will leave on Thursday with Art. and Banian, while Saturday's boat will bring I''. D. .Jones with Comely and Bomb, and A. Cults with I'lying Start and Battle Eve. Acceptances for the first day's events at Trentham close on Friday next at !) p.m. At the same time entries .ire due for the Trial Plate and Selling Eace. (laskayne has been scratched for all engagements at the Wellington meeting. The Birkouhead gelding is unlikely to be seen ont for some considerable time. A probable defection from the Wellington Steeplechase is liraeburn, who so far holds an unbeaten certificate over country. It appears that while running in a paddock on Friday last another horse kicked him, and one of the 'chaser's liocks is swollen considerably. Glenroy has been scratched for the Stewards' Handicap, run on the opening day'of the Wellington meeting. Owing to the absence of A. Reed in Sjdney, L. Wilson will ride Seadown and ths All Red filly in their Trentham engagements. Generally speaking, the weights for the Wellington meeting linve been favourably received, though tho concensus of opinion is that El Gallo might have got a few pounds more. Though Braebum has iron three races on end, it is the general idea that he is not a top-notcher, and as in the case of Taroro, a-bit of weight will find him out. In assessing him within lllb. of El- Gallo, the Hastings horse has none the best of it. Waimai, too, lias been, well lookod after with list. slb„ but Mr. Coylo has paid a. lot of attention to the failuro of Tareao at Hastings, and has taken pounds oil him. In this he will probably be proved correct, as the Hawke's Bay running shows - that Tarero mii6t have been very lucky in tiie past. Jackmnn and Naupata are others to como in for a big drop. Of the light-weights, Now York and Idealism are both likely to bo heard of." New York may find tho distance a trifle far, but Idealism was second in the Winter Steeplechase at Ellerslie, over a three miles course.

Tlie Winter Hurdles is a peculiar handicap altogether, being framed on a light scale. One .horse that seems to stand out. is Styra.v, fOst. 121b., who scored at Hastings "on Saturday with 101 b- more 011 his back. The Hawcra horse is now (it the top of his form, and being a good performer in lioavy going, ho may be very prominent in next week's race. Another likely horse is Te Onga, who finished next to El Gallo in the Great Northern Hurdles. Crown Pearl, lOst. 71b., has onlv to accept to have plenty of followers, and as the National is run over two miles and a half this year, his owner

iiTny decide to race the Coronet gelding at Trentham.

A. J. M'l'linn, who lias boon out of luck for some considerable time, won both hack steeplechases at Hastings, and ho is j»ou* only ono point behind F. I'lynn for tho premiership. .Both riders will bo at Trentham next week. Tho Ha-wera-lrainod Harbour Light has an engagement in butli the Parliajnontarj Handicap and Wintor Hurdles ai Trentham, but as it is understood that he is being reserved for tho National Hurdles lio will probably race here in flat events only. C. Emerson, had the mount on Chantry, who started second favourito in the Flying Welter Handicap at Rosehill, and finished out. of a place. The race was wnn by an outsider in Lord Linnet, who had K. Bracken, in the saddle. Ima, who captured the Princo of Wales's Stakes at Ihe reccnt Rosehill meeting, is bv tho Hotchkiss liorse, Siege Gun, who used to race in the late Mr. G. G.- Stead's colours. The Blenheim-owned Koue, by Knight Errant, was rnn'ner-up to Porlicr in the Second Division of the I'lying Handicap, run at Victoria Park on Wednesday last. The New Zealawler started at a. good price, and was a length behind the winner at the finish.
