INQUESTS
Four inquests were held by Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, Coroner, at the Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon. A verdict rjf "Death by. drowning" was returned in the case of Miss Agnes Anderson, who was missed from the steamer Moeraki on her journey from Lyttelton to Wellington on November 4, last year. Touching tho death of the man John Wilson, aged 60,. who was washed up by the sua. near the Thorndon Esplanade waterfront, a. verdict of "Found drowned" was returned. Tho evidence '.vent, to show that deceased had been in (he habit of walking along tho Esnlanade wall, and on the last occasion had fuiieii into the sea. On July 1, a woman named Elizabeth Ann O'Connor, aged b", died suddenly at her residence, No. 1 Kent Terrace. 'Her husband, Michael O'Connor, said his wife was in her usual health on the previuus evening. Dr. Gilmer's evidence was :o the effect that the deceased (lisd from chronic nephritis, and tho verdict was in accord with the medical testimonv. . When attempting to board the steaniei Tnrawcra on Juno 8, David Carnll, 27, fell into the sea, and was riiuwned. Deceased was seen by Riohard Lewis, harbour night watchman, to be hanging to a rope, evidently thrown by someone on board to help Carroll to get on the ship. The next ho heard, was a cry of "Man overboard," and tho accident boat was lowered from the steam°r. Peter Scott Isbister, third officer of the Tarawera, corroborated this statement, mid he threw olf his coat and dived into Ihe harbour. Before he could reacn lwm, Carroll sank. The coroner praised Mr. Isbister for his effort to save deceased, and returned a verdict of "Accidentally djoirned."
