ANGLICAN SYNOD

BISHOP SPEOTT'S' OPENING - AUDKBSS. The Synod of the Anglican Dioccse of Wellington was opened in the Masonic Hall, Boulcott. Street, yesterday afternoon, under the presidency of tho Bishop of Wellington (Ur. Sprott). There was a large attendance. Jll the course of his presidential address tho Bishop said: "Since last we met tho General Synod has held its triennial session in Christchurch. Its most important act was tho establishment of a Standing Committee of General Synod, which is to meet annually in AVelliugton in the month of August, and at such other times as its members may think necessary. It consists of the Bishops of the Province together with one clerical and one lay member, to be chosen by the several standing committees from their diocesan representatives. This Provincial Standing Committee is authorised to exercise all powers regarding properties vested in General Synod, which the General Synod • now exercises; to transact whatever business the General Synod may from time to time remit to it, aud to act for General Synod 011 all occasions requiring the prompt aud united action of the Church. It is also constituted it Board of Missions for the Province. The Standing Committee has appointed the Rov. A. 31. Johnson and Mr. W. J. Birch as our representatives.

"Our. Military Affairs Committee was constituted tho.comniittec for,the whole province. In tliis connection I may say that this committee is asking for the immediate provision of JJISOO, .£3OO of which it is expected our own dioceso will contribute. I earnestly hope there will be no delay ii) providing this modest sum. Of all the members of our church nono liavo just now snch claims upon us as the men who have volunteered to fight for country and Empire. "Since last we met we have lost Archdeacon Harper from our Diocesan Staff of Clergy. His departure from us is mora than a diocesan loss; it is provincial. I need not to recount, his many services to the Church of Now Zealand, and to this diocese. His praise is known in all onr 'churcK'es. We were all delighted to learn that he had so quickly found .a sphere of work, which will give ample scope for his characteristic energy, and wish him and his family every Divine blessing. We welcome to this diocese the Synod the Eeverends R. Godfrey, CI. R. Hervey,' F. M. Kempthorne, B.A. (U.N.Z.I, K. J. Macfarland, B.A. (U.N.Z.), all of whom were admitted to the diaconate in December last;.also the Rev. F. G. Harvic, M.A. (llerton College, Oxford), priest. "It will he remembered that at last session the Synod approved of tho reopening of the Hadlield College and Hostel, aud the establishment of a general ■ Endowment' Fund. Tho committee appointed by the Synod, after careful consideration, issued an appeal asking for contributions towards: (a) An Endowment Fund of not less than *£2000; (b) a. sum of .£2OO for the renovation of the college, after seven years' wear and tear, and' for immediate espouses connecter with the opening of the college. . I am glad to be able to announce that towards the Endowment Fundi the sum of ,£1229 has been already together with a promise by a generous friend of tho last .£IOO of the second ,£IOOO. Towards tho second fund -£120 has been received. The cost of renovation has amounted to about .£240, and other expenses connected with the opening of the institution amounted to about .£4O. As these expenses have already been incurred, it will be seon .that we need an additional ,£l6O towards the. second fund. I do hope this will soon be forthcoming I am sure that Hadfield College will be of great service to the church in the coming years. I wish to express my heartiest gratitude to those members of the church who have so generously responded to the appeal." The Bishop's references to tho war and war problems are reported in another part of this issue.
