THAT WAR BONUS
WILL THE GOVERNMENT TAKE A ;". HINT? Sir,—ln reference to the Civil Service war bonus, may I suggest that.this is a splendid opportunity for the National Government to set a good example, and show its appreciation of the famly man by -.paying; this war bonus on a familybasis P It is the family man. who is bearing the brunt of the extra cost of living, and every additional dependant adds to liis burden. So if relief is to be given why not do it in the most just way and really help'tha hard-hit man who is doing most for the Empire? The single man and no-family couples do not need assistance. A wife with no family can easily turn her hand to something to supplement-her husband's salary if need be. But there are few mothers.who can do justice to their little ones and earn at the same time, even if it were fair to suggest they should do so. The no-fam-ily couples will tell you that a war bonus is most appreciated by them, as theraniily man is -used to self-denial and therefore doesn't feel the pinch' of' this extra cost of living as much as they do. Is not this typical of the spirit that .mates the no-family couples, who are doing nothing for the Empire and never intend to if tfiey oan help it? A war bonus paid on a family basis (say 6d. a day. for overy child up to the ago of 15 years) would be a real help to the hard-pressed family man. But people don't expect to pay taxes that are to provide more luxury for single men and pleasure-loving no-family couples.—l am, etc, PATRIOT. '
