CAPTURE OF KOLOMEA

The long-espeoted concerted offensive by the Brfßshi and the French en the Western front has begun. Premonitory signs that something bog was afoot have not been wanting during the.past week, and now the •" blow has. been struck, and north of tho Somme the enemy's line has been penetrated for a length of sixteen miles. Villages have been captured, counter-attaoks dealt with, and prisoners taken. The French, attacking on the British right, are fighting gallantly. Correspondents' dispatches throw a vivid light on the various aspects of the gigantic battle. The British artillery fire has reached a terrific intensity. On the Verdun front there has been the hottest of fighting. Tho Thiaumont' work has been taken, retaken,,and taken again. The Italians along their whole battWront are forcing tho pressure against tho Austrians, and have captured fresh positions. Tie reports from the Italian front, are enlivened this morning by' an interesting description of how General Cadorna prepared his counter-stroke while the Austrians wore delivering their great blow-in the Trentino, The Russians ■ have added another viofory to their swelling list, Jn the capture of Koloriica, the most important railway centre in Bukowina, and have also dealt decisively with a Turkish offensive in the Caucasus.
