. A ■ CLAIM FOR COMPENSATION. William Elder Martin, a wharf labourer, having met with an accident on board the s.s. Ruahino on January 12, sued Messrs. S. Wood and Son, shipwrights, for .E3G Is., as compensation for Imving'had a .little finger dislocated, and his chest and shoulder bruised. Ho bad also developed hernia. Mr. W. G. Riddcll, S.M., heard the case. Mr. E. M. Beechy appeared for Martin, and Mr. M. Myers for the defendants, ■ ~' The defence was that from the date of the accident to March 20, plaintiff had been paid 30s. per week, which was equal to half-pay. Mr. Myers, considered that the plaintiff had been adequately compensated, for, at tho date mentioned, Martin had been reported as fit for employment. Mr. Beechy said plaintiff was not yet wholly recovered, and that the hernia prevented his taking such labour as he was formerly fitted for. He therefore claimed a lump sum of .£35, or 30s. a week till ho was quite well. After taking evidence His Worship said he would take a few days to. consider his decision. ' POLICE CASES. A young woman, Evelyn Olga Brown, whofo ago was given as 19, and who had come from Eunedin to see her father away with the Thirteenth Reinforcements, and ,had fallen among persons of ill-repute, was brought before Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., charged on remand with being ah idle and disorderly person. Inspector Hendrey said he had mado inquiries and found that the girl's mother had been dead some years, so she was alone in the world. The Magistrate sentenced the accused to one month's imprisonment and-recommended the prison authorities to place her in an industrial school, whence she might obtain honest employment. Frank William Johnson, aged 34. was fined £3, or in default one month's imprisonment, for- using obscene language in Clyde Quay. Petor Hughes (62) and Edward Bloomfield (38) were fined 10s., or in default 48 hours' imprisonment, for inebriety, and three firsl>oll'enders were convicted and discharged. '
