The fields wore good, and tho racing interesting. There was a good attendance, the totnlisator. handling .1216,099, against last jcar. In the' Hack Steeples Parematn. j un'ped off in front and led down tho hack. At tho sod wall Captain Dick had taken charge, hut ho fell heavily, and Korirangi came down over him. Otupai r, as up with Wirokirio coming into the f.traight 'the first time, and the pair led Precious Metal over the double. Tho contestants were now strung out, but all H'oro jumping well. Across tho bottom Nitu improved her position, and jumped t : ho last fence.just behind Wiroiino «nd Otupai. A great finish took place between' tho trio, Nita, on tho inside, winning bv a head from Otupai, with "Wirokino a neck away. Precious Metal rnia fourth. IC. Lambess, rider of Korirangi, had liis collarbone cracked, but lliles escaped injury. \ 111 the Winter Hack Handicap, after a splendid finish, the improving St. Unier.got up on. the post and beat Jiaraetotora, who was in charge practically throughout. Sir Donald ran a fair raco for about six furlongs, but fore and Silenus were disappointing, '"ho former got slopped a couple of times.' War Tax rail a really good race, and ; finished fourth, and Goldenlyto got on to the heels of Silenus at the .lialf-milo and came down, givfng S. Eeid a bad shaking, which accessitated his removal to the hospital. No bones were broken. Irt the Hawko's Bay Hurdles I'urseliller jumped out in front and led tho .wh'olo way. She was challenged ever the last six furlongs' by Styrnx ?nd Glenorchy, but held them off and v.on by a length. Czaronus, who finished boldly, was close up fourth, and then came'Gladful and Ariinke. Tararu Jack was tailed oil' the,whole, way. He will no doubt do considerably.-better in some of the bigger events later on. Purseliller gave a much belter; display than at Napier, but the .improved 'going would account for this. Her good jumping assisted her to get" the journey, and she won from Multicipal, with the othor pair cioso up. The winner is held on lease by .T.
