THE TURF
NOTES AND COMMENTS
!By Gle.ncoe.l
The Hawko's Bay Jockey Club's Winter meeting will bo opened to-day. The Hack Steeplechase, which is the first event, will bo run at 12.20 p.m., and the concluding event at. 4.20 p.m. Paromata has recovered from the injuries he met with at Gisbome, aud he with Nita, who has been consistent but unlucky lately, may be the popular picks in tho opening event. Tho bigger fences will suit Otupni, who was looking dangerous when another horse ran across him and brought him down at the last fence in a similar event at Napier. St. Onier, who is on the improve, will be a runner in tho Winter Hack Handicap, one mile and a quarter, and will bo ridden by W. Ryan, who has scored on the Moral mare in her last two victories. Fore is also a starter, and tho Waipawa, maro can bo doponded upon to do well for W. Price. Those who noticed her finishing run at Otaki will keep her on their side to-day. Those who believe in coincidences can find plenty of material to exercise their minds in connection with It. King's mare. She is named Fore, and there are four letters in her name. Czaronus has plenty of admirers for the Hawko's Bay Hurdles. Mr. H. A. Russell's horse is a good sticker, but so far h© has not been up against anything of tho class of Tararu Jack, who is more than useful, and ran second in the Cen■tury Hurdles to Master Regal, with a pretty good field behind him. The consistent and unbeaten Tarero may be thß elect of backers in the big Steeplechase. He is only a little fellow, and has a lot of weight, and may find it hard to present the improving Vascular with 231b. Fagot is a good, safo jumper, but Vasoular jumps well and has pace. .-■ . In the Hack.Hurdles "the Gisborne horse King of Athol will have a lot more supporters than ho had at Napier last week. Ho is a good jumper, and has a good deal of pace. ■ Atuatoro, who will have the services of the crack amateur, Mr. Leslie, M-Don-nld, may-be tho most sought after in. the Ladies' Bracelet. At Napier last week .ho scored in the most convincing style. - There is a field of twenty in the Heretaunga Handicap, six furlongs and a half. Sea Lord likes the going on the heavy side, and tho chestnut ran two good races at Napier. Blaokheart, with only 21b. above'tho minimum, may be dangerous, as he finished close up at Napier, and is a much better horse tor tho race. Tho rather appropriate name of Cooing has been bestowed upon the Boniform—Ringdove filly, owned by tho Wellington sportsmen, tho Biddiford Bros. Wishful and The Toff, two members of R. O-'Douncll's Yaldhurst team, were gelded recently. They are how going on all right, and should be ready to carry Mr. G. L. Stead's colours with distinction in the spring. Black Nut, by Blacksfone, seems fairly useful in the company he meets fn New South Wales, and at Wagga on June 13 ho carried 9st. 91b. into first place in the principal handicap. The following day he went one bettor by winning a nine furlong, handicap under I.Ost. 21b. He won comfortably in liniu. SO.Jsec. The progeny of the ex-Auckland champion, Nonette, carried off three races, at a meeting at Hockhampton (Queensland) this month. So far R. O'Doiuiell, private trainer' to Mr. G. L. Stead, has only broken' iu three coming two-year-olds. They aro Ample, a filly by Rokeby—Miss Dalrymple; Perform, a gelding by Boniform —Pedometer; and Red Rock, a geldin-jby Rokeby—Rose Red. . ' .' The Campfire—Mere gelding Hopye will assist at the Wellington Racing Club's Winter gathering, being engaged in the Maiden Steeplechase. This gelding is one of the finest fencers at Ellerslie, taking the fenoes in his stride. Hopye went over the steeplechase fences in the centre of the courso on Tuesday, giving a good display of fast, clean fencing. Mr. George- Thornton, the part- owner of Master .Kegel,'.left for Brisbane this week on a health-seeking mission; but will probably be back in timoto see his horso run at the C.J.C. National .meeting. A. Shearsby returns-from Sydney to New Zealand on Saturday, with the junipers Tho Hound and Sleight of Hand.— Press Association..
FIXTURES.
Jnno 30 and July.l.—Hawke's Bay J.C. Winter. . July 12, 13, and 15—Wellington B.C. Winter. August 15, 17, and 19.-C.J.C. Grand National, - November 4.—New Zealand Cup.
This week's '"Sporting and Dramatic Keviow" is again up to its usual high standard. The theatre of war is represented in views showing Dublin under martial law, and the damago caused by the bombardment during the recent riots, motors used as barricades, Italian snipers, French.snipers in the field olc. 1 Fine pictures taken at the Napier Park Racing Club's and the Pakuranga Hunt Club's meetings make up the sporting section, and scenes from the pantomime "Mother Goohs" provide an. interesting frontispiece.—Advt.
