"Is it always necessary to speak the truth?" was the amusing .subject of a debate) beld by tho French Ccrcle at Bartlett's Studio on Wednesday. evening. There was a very lively difference of opinion on the subject, and clever argument and illustration was forthcoming from both sides. Miss Van Staveren and Captain' Barclay argued in favour of the necessitv of speaking tho truth, whilst Miss Rowley and Mr. John Ri'gg produced some very cogent reasons why suchi a strict code was hardly necessary end at times altogether inadvisable. The general debato wliich followed the leadors was extremely diverting, nearly everyone in tho room being "full of wise saws and modern instances" to support their views. On tho voices the chairman decided in favour of the "Ayes," but the 'Noes" clamoured for a division, and Qgain tho decision was for tho truth. The monthly meeting of tho executive committee of' tho Wellington Diocesan Council, New Zealand Catholic Federation, was held last evening at St. Patricks Hall, Boulcott Street, tho Rev. Father Hurley, S.M., presiding over a full attendance of members. Tho draft report of tho exeeutivo for tho past year was considered, and agreed to. Satisfaction was expressed at the sound financial position of tho council. Attention was directed to tho naturo of some of tho posters exhibited outside certain places of entertainment in the city, and it was decided to await the result of the Dominion Council's action in referonco to films, etc., before proceeding with tho matter. Tho rev. chairman stated that as this would bo the last meeting of the executive he desired to express tho thanks of the council to tho honorary secretary (Mr. W.'F. Johnson) for tho work of tho past year,'with special reference to tho businesslike manner in which the reports, etc., had been prepared, and the work of the executive had been placed before tho meetings.
