DISCHARGED SOLDIERS
FINDING WORK FOB THEM. The following progress statement showing the work of the Discharged Soldiers' Information Department as at June 27 has been issued by the Minister in charge (the Hon. A. L. Herdman) :— (I) Total number of men on register: (a) Disposed of, 2871; (b) under action, 1331; (c), not ready for action (including men returned by recent transports), 76C; total, 1071. (II) Reports received from interviewing officers, 32C1; reports in hands of interviewing officers, 552; reports issued. 3513. (III) Particulars showing how cases dealt with: (A) Cases disposed of—(a) Left New Zealand or cannot ascertain address, 105"; (b) re-enlisted or returned, to military duty or ha"e wort to return to, etc., 1210; (c) men who have signed "assistance not required," 7-13; (d) men placed in employment; 027; (e) men who have not responded to repeated communications, and men who have accepted work tho Department found for them but failed to start work', 97; (f) men who have drawn sections of laud, 83; total, 2871. (B) Cases under action: (a) Reports upon cases not yet returned by officers making inquiries, 552; .(b) awaiting further advice (chiefly men who -nave slated that they are not yet desirous of work), 114 j (c) at present on employment wanted register, 3(i8; total, 1331. (C) Cases not ready for action: Men recently returned to Now Zealand, now convalescing, not ready for employment, and not vet discharged bv the military authorities, 7(10; grant total, 4971. The 14 unplaced men in the Wellington district desire employment as follows :-—Drivers, 3; stoker, 1; builder's labourer, 1; farm hand, 1; light work, 8.
