The.'lHawke's Bay Jockey CluVs Winter Meeting will be opened to-inorrow, and will be concluded on Saturday. The two principal jumping events are each r.un on the opening day. Entries for the principal events at the C J.C. Winter Meeting close on Friday evening. ' The Eokeby—Tea Cup filly in K. Quinlivilli's stables at Hastings has been named La Tassc. Nominations for'the New Zealand Cup close on July 7. The V.R.C. Grand National Meeting will beiopened at Flemington on Saturday. Tiie Grand National Hurdles, three miles, will be decided on the opening day. When the last mail left Lord Grey, who is to bp G. Scobio's mount, was first fancy. This horse was formerly owned by the ex-Wairarapa. sportsman, Mr. A. MathesoTi, but ho has raced in several different ownerships during the past twelve months.' • There is a disposition locally to fancy Bluestono' for tho Parliamentary Handicap at, Treiitham. Although the grey gelding is a good horse in heavy going, he has never yet won over further than eight furlongs. There is every indication ■ that the three best steeplechasers ih El Gallo, Tarero,- and Braeburn, will meet in tlio Steeplechase. Tf Mr. H. Coylo can get this trio, also AA'aimai, Tdealism, Queen's Post. Bransfield, and •Tacltman to the post, .the race should be a very interesting one. Judging by events which occurred ill Wellington yesterday, Tararu Jaok and Tarero may be the fancy for the Hawke'.s Bay Hurdles and Steeplechase, to bo' run on Friday. So'me of Mr. Hobbs'a horses are likely to be racing at the .Cnnterbmy Park meeting on Saturday. Corrie is in the Hurdles, and Deltonia, Down, and Peg in fiat eventa. Apparently some of the rising two-year-olds in J. P. Jefferd's stables at Ngatarawa are showing promise, as.i'our of them have been freely entered, for coming weight-for-age events. Amongst them is the full sister to Chortle, who has been named - Chuckle. An Ellerslie-trained quartet, in Bluestone, To Onga, Master Kegal, and Fisher, are reported to be.looking at their.best, Indications point to .them being got ready for the Trentham and Riccartou fixtures. . An outbreak of influenza in several ISllerslie stables is causing Auckland trainers some ailkiety at present. Since his arrival in Sydney, C. Emerson been been doing riding work at Handwick. Ho will do the riding for M. Hobbs's team at Canterbury Park on Saturday next. A prominent Wanganui sportsman to join the colours is Mr. G. F. Moore, of Bushy Park, owner of the imported Hallowmas, Armistice, Melinite, and many other equine heroes and heroines. The Manawatu Hunt Club will. hold ils Tace meeting on August 30. Tim principal event carries .£IOO stake mopey. The weights will be adjusted by Mr. H. Coyle. Word from Hastings states that Haskayne lias been scratched for all engagements at the meeting. . Mr! H. M.' Campbell, for many years a prominent member of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club, will stand for president at the next annual meeting.of the club. ' ■ • . ..Though some of .the weights of thn New Zealand horses have been cabled over, there is no mention of the impost allotted Eligible in the big spring handi: caps at" Eandwick. The Dunedin owner, Mr. E. ActonAdams, whose, horses are brained at Porirua, has engaged llocksalt (Eokeby— lima)- and the Martian—Hebrew Maid filly in the Dunedin Stakes, to be run at Wingatui in the spring. The same owner.has a filly by Demosthenes, from Formula,'running out on Mr. G. P. Donnelly's place. The first lot of the progeny of the imported horse are highly spoken of,, and there will probably be keen competition for the next draft that goes into the ring. The yearlings nominated in Victoria this year 'constituted a record for the State.

The 2GG entries for this year's Melbourne Cup constitute a record ior that race, • the previous best being 2GO. . As there lire 231 horses in the Caul field Cup, it is therefore possible to form (il.'iliG combinations for the "Cup" double. ' .

No fewer than 21 foals* -by Comedy Xing have been entered by Mr. 8. Green for the Caul field Futurity Stakes, to be run in February, 1911}.

The North Otago Jockey Club yesterday handed the trustees of the North Otago Soldiers' Fund a cheque for making the club's contribution to patriotic purposes to dato i!looo.—Press Association.
