ENLISTMENT OF TEACHERS
. PLACES CANNOT BE FILLED. In the course of his reply to a deputation which waited on the Hon. J. A. Hanan on Saturday in connection ,vith educational matters, tho Minister said that in order to enable him to come to 'some definite conclusion as to the expediency or otherwise of limiting the enlistments of teachers in. the service of the Dominion, he had given instructions for the various education boards to be circularised as to tfheir experience in Sliding more or less suitable persons ti act in a relieving capacity or to fill any permanent vacancios that may occur. It was interesting to note, he said, that out of some 4MG teachers there are now only about 237 Bingle men in public schools, and many of these are pupil teachers .or student ' teachers under iwenty-one years of age. Clerks, mechanics, and even professional men and experts can, to a considerable extent, be. secured by some Departments from the staffs of otlier employers, but . in. the case of teachers there is practically only one source of supplv, and that la already seriously depleted. .
