MATTERS OF INTEREST FROM FAR AND NEAR,

The Soldiers' Club. There was a large attendance of soldiers at the Club'in Sydney Street on Saturday, both in the afternoon and also in the evening, when a dance specially arranged for tneir benefit was given by the committee, the arrangements, as usual, being in tho charge of Mrs. Coleridge and Mrs. C. Earle. Plenty of partners had been provided for tho men and excellent music ivas played by Mm. L. Marchant. In the main nail a musical programme had been arranged, the Misses Henry played, and Miss Beryl Earle singing. Several lof tho soldiers also joined in choruses. Mrs. Maasey and several of the ladies of the committee were present, and at tho end of the evening "Auld Lang Syno" and the "National Anthem" were sung. Several of the men of tho Fourteenth Reinforcements, before leaving the club, expressed their great appreciation of the warm hospitality that Had been shown them at the club. During the afternoon some of the next-of-kin of the men had visited tho building, and had told the hostess what a great comfort it had been to them to know that their sons had such a place to go to. They felt that tho men were not bereft of home life when they had such a place to go to. It is such sayings as tnat that make tho ladies of 'the club feel they are indeed doing a work worth while. Among those who have been interesting themselves in connection with the public meeting of women, which, has been called for Tuesday afternoon to discuss tho War Regulations Bill as it affects women, are Mrs. A. R. Atkinson, Dr. Platts Mills, Mrs. Houlder, Dr. Edith Huntley, and Mrs. M'Vicar. The matter is important, and it is hoped thero will Ixj a good attendance of women and particularly of representatives of women's societies.

Miss M'Dougall, who has been staying with her sister (Mrs. Guy Didsbury), has returned to tho AVairarapa.

Sifter Nutsey, who was mentioned in General Maxwell's dispatches l , has re-, cently returned to Auckland.

Mrs.' Brailsford has returned from Christchurch, and is spending a few days with friends in Wellington before going to Karnka Bay.

Tho wedding took placo at the residence, of. the bride's parents, New Plymouth, of Miss Olive Anibury, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Anibury, to Mr. Percy Stainton. Tho .Rev. A. B. Chappell performed tlie ceremony. TJie brido was attended by her sister, and was given away by her father. Tho best man was Mr. W. Nicuoll.

' Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Vallance are visiting Napier, The Scottish women's hospitals, financed by the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies in England, which have done such fine work in. Franco and Serbia, aro preparing a unit to be sent to Russia, to work among the refugees from Poland and Lithuania. Already an offer to send to Petrograd a maternity unit consisting of doctors, midwives, sanitary officer, dispenser, and cook in chnrgo of an administrator, with secretary, interpreter, and almoner, has been, eagerly accepted by the Empress Alexandra and the Russian Government. Should the work be successful and the necessary funds forthcoming, there is more of the like work to bo undertaken in Gatchina, 30 miles from Petrograd. Miss Greoish and Miss Helster (Timaru are visiting Wellington. Tho golden wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Chattertoii, of Vogeltown were celobrated on Thursday. Among those who wore present at tho celebrations were two sons and three daughters, with their families j one daughter, however, being away in Englanci. Congratulatory telegrams were received from various parts of New Zealand. Madamo Boenfve and Miss Beatrice Day left Wellington at tho end of last week, the former en route, for France, and the latter for England. Mr., and Mrs. G. L. Rutherford have returned to Christchurch from a visit to Auckland. Dr. Margaret M'Cahon, daughter of Mr. J. M'Caliou, Timaru, who has been practising her profession in Wellington for some time, has been appointed Ivtedieal Inspector of Schools for Otago. Mrs. Turrell is visiting Christchurch. .
