A MATTER FOR THE AUTHORITIES.
ALLEGED ENEMY CELEBRATIONS AT KAPQNtrA. Sir,—A lino or so just to air the feelings of the citizens uf Juiponga through, tho niediupi of your paper. lam enclosing a copy of a letter ntatuig a tew laots which nave occurred anil will continue to occur, if not checked pretty sooji. On tho Saturday after Lord Kitchener was drowned a largo number of- Swiss arrived at the hotel here, and commenced to drink the health ot our enemies. Weil, . this went on until motor-cars or gigs conveyed them to a farm, whore n huge stock of liquor was stored for further celebrations; A sii'all party of our men nearly came to. bJriws ivith these Swiss before they left the town, and things looked very ugly. Our local police constable's patience was considerjibly 6trained before tilings got right. If it had not been for the. tact tho constablo showed firearms would have been used. You can hardly blame these people for breaking the law wlien another batcji came driving in with a largo German e;gle painted in bright litters on the front of the gig. Well, this person will be handled'somewhat roughly if not clipped very soon. lam a subscriber to your paper, so I would like to see these people put in their places. Trusting I have not bored you with this letter. Perhaps some more able Tcranaki pen will come to light if they see this, and give a few more facts.—l ;>iu, etc., ONE WRO HAS SERVED THE COUNTRY. [The letter enclosed by our correspondent is taken from the columns of the Hawera "Star," and refers to the settlement in the Dominion of Swiss immigrants. It concludes as follows;— "We educate alien people's children, and they are safeguarded nnd protected by all our laws, and yet from time to time some of these same people hold festivals and celebrations, on the receipt of an enemy victory. For many months past this has been their custom, and I need only recall a very few occasions on sprees have taken plnce in honour of the occasion; the overthrow of Serbia, the Dardanelles withdrawal, the surrender of General Townsliend, and. most lately, the death of the Secretary of State for War (Lard . Kitchener). But is this going to be allowed to continue indefinitely. and are the people going to allow such demonstrations of anti-British feeling to go unchecked? The time anil lirfiency of neril calls for action "n tho part of the authorities, 'ho if they remain undisturbed by Hie clamour Around, arid'refuse to read "the ]'U!»> writing on the wall, will find ths position more difficult and serious."
Nn doubt tf's ninttoi' will Tcceivp the attention of the police and the mi-iturv authorities.]
