GERMAN PRISONERS

AN OCCUR.'RBNCB-IN AUCKLAND.

More about German prisoners who 50 to' hotels in Auckland \ras brought uudor the notice of the Defence Minister in the Hons# yesterday.. It appeared from newspaper reports quoted by Mr. Poole that a German prisoner with his guard went to-an hotel- with the object of having dinner there, but because bis. dining-room staff objected tha hbtelkeeper had to send the German and his.-guard' away, still hungry.- Jl.r. Poole asked the Minister whether lie would take--strong'measures to deal, with matters of this kind. The Minister of Dc-fexice (the Hon. .T. Allen) said that he knew nothing of the facts of the matter, but that he would bo very pleased to make inquiry. As far as he knew the German referred to was one who lately had been deported from Samoa to New Zealand. Ho had landed at Auckland, and someone had to feed him. . If the hotel in question would not feed him lie would have to gist his food somewhere. He suggested to Mr. Poole that in-cases of this kind it would bo better if he brought the matters before him (the Minister), privately, instead of bringing.them up publicly'in tho House. The publication of such* reports without verification was undesirablo in the public interests. Mr. Poole: This matter has been published in the public Press. Mr. Alien said he was aware of that, but it was rogrettable that they should be brought, up in the House, and so circulated throughout the whole Dominion. It would be much better in the public interests of Members would mention such matters to him privately; or give him previous notice of an intention to ask questions concerning theni. Mr. Poole, said that lie often tried to got into- touch with tho Minister regarding such matters, but the particular matter now referred to had been in circulation. since yesterday morning Ho had 110 desire to create unnecessary - difficulties for the Minister. Mr. Allen: That ia what you are do- . 1 Air. Poole: It is my ; duty as a representative of the people to bring such matters forward. -
