. At the meeting of the Advisory Board of the Federated War Relief Associations it was decided that when a married man attests ho / should be compelled to sign an allotment of pay for the support of his wife and separation allowance for the benefit of his wife and children.
At Makara on Wednesday evening the residents tendered a farewell to Corpl. M. W. Prendeville and Pte. H. Monaghan, who ore leaving lor the front, 'i'he" gathering took the form of a banquet, and was attended by o\;er one hundred persons, some of whom drove long distances to take part in the ceremony. Among thoso present were Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P., and Revs. Woodward, of Karori, and Father Smytlio, of the Thorndon parish. These gentlemen ad.dressed the gathering, and while bestowing: upon the guests of the evening congratulatory remarks upon their enlistment, each.'having to make considerable sacrifice to do so, referred in eulogistic terms to the regard with which eacli is esteemed by tho residents, and to the sterling qualities possessed by each. After other prominent, residents, including, Councillors Bryant, Monk, and Monaghan, of the Makara County Council had spoken in commendatory terms of the soldiers, Mr. Wright, on behalf of the residents, presented each of the 6oldiers with a suitably-inscribed wristlet watch.. Later in the evening further presentations were made—the gifts of tlw Rev.. Father Smyt.be—to tlie soldiers. This part of the ceremony was entrusted to Mr. J. M'Clevio, v former settler of tho district.
