BRAEBURN WINS BIG STEEPLES. By Telegraph— (Special Correspondent./ | . Napior, Juno 23. The Winter Meeting o£ tho Napier Park Racing Club bogan to-day, in dull but fine weather. Tlioro was a fair attendance. The going was very heavy. Tho lotalisator investments were compared with Jjlo.ltj'J lost year. Tho Hack Hurdles field was much stronger than is usually seen out at sucli fixtures. It contained Derby and Cup winners, besides many other prominent horses on the flat. At the start, Portland Lady led from Bon Revo and Bodenham, with the remainder strung out. Down the back Bon Revo took charge, and Jem and Czaronus moved up. The leader fell at the half-mile, and Czaronus led into the straight, and stalling off a run by Golden March ho won handsomely. Gem was very tired, in third place, and Bodenham was the mext to finish. ■ Gazette, who was heavily backed, -ran tailed off the whole way. Golden March will do considerably hotter tomorrow, and so will Bon Reve. The heavy going tied np Portland Lady and Bodenham, who both shaped well. Bransfield was favourite in the Hack Steeples, and after, giving a perfect exhibition of jumping ho ran in an easy winner. Otupai looked dangerous half a mile from home, but he lost his rider 'at tho last fence. Bransfield was a winner at any part of the last circuit. £ he Chef give a good display, but at the finish tho well-seasoned Nita cut him out of second place. Wooloomooloo also did well,. and finished fourth, with Kiripuku, who had always been prominent, next. Taihape folj, and his rider (Futcher) was badly shaken. Turehau (R- Hunt) was nearly down at tho brush, but his rider made a smart recovery. Hygia, tho favourite in the Stewards' Mile, ran badly, but Kooya, the second choice, did well. At the start Huehabye showed out, but Mt. Victoria soon took charge, and led to the three furlongs, where Sea Lord ran past him. Golden Lyto' then put in a run, followed by Kooya, and catching Sea Lord at the distance the pair had the finish to themselves, Golden Lyte winning by a bare length. Sea Lord was clo6o up, and then came The Summit, Imnior, and Mt. Victoria.

Braeburn scored hie third win over country in the big Steeplechase, for which lie started a hot order. Ho gave a splendid exhibition of jumping, and did not look like getting beaten except pneo when lie chanced the sod-wall, and Merry Lad gained a few lengths on him; but it was short lived, as the Merriwea celding is not nearly as forward as Braebum, and could not finish with him. Nnupata bumped his rider off at • the sod-wall the second time, and Vascular fell -at the top of the course. Cant. Mackay ran a good race, and so did Queen's Post, who was prominent the whole way.

The Karamu stable provided the favourite in the Necklace, but he nulled very hard, and beat himself, and in tho straight Atuntoro, who is a greatly improved horso in looks, came 011, and beat him, while Multum also headed'him on tho post.

Pursefiller had most supporters in the AhuriTi Hurdles, fot{< which Jem was the only withdrawal. The favourite as Usual was slow to leave the mark, and Kew, with Crawford carried \on the running. With a.mile to go Pursefiller was at tho renr of a bunched field. Down tho back Gladful went up on the fence, and with Styrax had charge across' the bottom._ A very interesting finish took place, .in which the Karnmu gelding, ably handled by IV. Bush, gained the mastery. Ariiake was a 'poor third, and then camo the favourite, who made a bad showing in tho heavy going, and Awahon, who will do better later.

A well-backed candidate in.O'tara scored decisively in the concluding event ConBislca.led tlie Gisborne horse to the'turn,, where Aurore an<l Cheloma were tlio most prominent of tile others. Otara won decisively in tlio Tim home, but Aurore failed badly. Cheloma 'was a good second. .V..' THE.
