ALLEGED THEFT OF MONYE

Mr. D. G..A. Cooper, S.M., dealt with the following cases at the Magistrate's Court yesterday:—Thos. Duwney, for n-hoii! Mr. P..'J. O'ltegau appeared, was charged-with the theft of Xi 12s. Gd. jn money and other articles, belonging to Edward Wormwell; of XI ss. in money, tho property of Cecil Charles Coates, and a corkscrew and shaving stick valued at 3s. Gd., belonging to Lawrence Claudo Mason.

Accused pleaded not guilty. The .evidence showed that.Downey had occupied a room at the Wentworth Hotel, oppositea room in -which three soldiers were sleoping on tlio night of Juno 18. During the night one . of the informants awoko, and discovered acoused iu the room, emptying the money contained in a bag. Ho was immediately secured, and • when searched it was alleged that his pockets contained articles belonging to idl three soldiers in the room. Accusod reserved his defence, and was committed to tho Supremo Court for trial. . . .DISOBEYING A COUKT ORDER. Thomas Turvcy was sent to prison for three months for disobeying a maintenance order, tho arrears on which amounted to iS'J. A little time previously he was before the Court in connection'with the samo order, aud was given a chance to pay off tho amount. But, it was stated, the defendant made no serious effort to obey the Court's order. . '. MISCELLANEOUS CASES. -" Mary Barclay, alias Davis, alias Quinn, was fined 205., iir default three days' imprisonment, for drunkenness. Nora /Nugent, was fined 405., in default seven .days' detention, for a similar offence.

. Jambs Vesey, a soldier, appeared to answer a charge of indecent exposure. Inspector Hendrey said that accusM had been convicted once before' 1 for \a similar offence. A sentence of six months' imprisonment, was imposed. Douglas West-, rupp, who was oharged with a similar of-' fence, was fined. 405., in default eevon days' imprisonment.

Edith Oonroy was charged witk the theft of a silver watch, the property of Henry James Smithi After hearing evidence, His Worship held that the ease was not strong enough to enter a. conviction. : She was therefore discharged: The Wellington City Corporation, represented by Mr: J. O'Shea, proceeded against Thos. Hitchcox for using a build, ing as a stable at the rear of his preinises. A fine of 10s. was inflicted, with costs, 9s.

For ; ,disobeying a maintenance order, arrears of which amounted to £U 85.,William James Jamieson- was sentenced to 14 - days'• imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended as long as he pays 125.per week, the amount of the order, and 2s. Gd. per week off arrears. ■-.■ Two small boys, who were charged with riding bicycles without lights after sunsot, were severely admonished by the Magistrate, and convicted "and discharged.
