FOR SUNDAY GOLF

: $_ _. DEPUTATION TO CITY RESEKVES COMMITTEE. A deputation, consisting of Dr. Cameron (the originator of the municipal links when a member of the City Council), Messrs. A. ■ Whiielaw and'Houldsttorth, imd a lady, representing.' Sunday golf players, waited on the Reserves Committeet of the City Council yesterday afternoon to express their views in favour of the game being allowed to be played on' the links at Berhampore on Sundays. ••, Dr. Cameron; < who was the' first speaker, took a medienl view, .of'the situation, pointing out that' with everyday business people Sunday was really the only day that afforded leisure enough for golf. In the winter time the' Saturday afternoons were very short, and play was necessarily restricted to most people to a couple of hours. He pointed out that golf was one of the most healthy exercises,' was a preventive in some measure of a good many diseases that flesh is heir to—to mention rheumatism, tuberand "nerves"—and was a great factor in keeping people fit and well for the succeeding week's work and worry. Mr. Whitelaw said that golf was quite a legitimate game to be played on Sunday, and should be allowed equally, if not before,' surf-bathing and some other Sunday recreations and amusements that were freely permitted by the municipal authorities. Golf was a winter game, and these links were made for the people- ~ "«■'..- A lady who,,was present also testified to the 9plendid health-promoting exercise golf provided for women. The chairman/(Mr. G. Frost) said that the position was clearly defined. There was a by-law in existence prohibiting play on Sundays, and until that by-law had been rescinded the committee could not override a decision of the council. The by-law mentioned was made, it W understood, beforo tho links came into existence. It is, reported' that a proposal may be made to have it rescinded.
