WHOSE DUTY?
PAYING FOR TREATMENT OP RECRUITS. The Minister of Public Health (Hon. G. A\ r . Russell) wrote to the Wellington Hospital Board recently, asking if the board would givo free treatment to recruits. The board replied that it was unable to accede to the request, and the Minister retorted that Wellington was the only board which took such a stand. The board pointed out that as Wellington was the chief recruiting centre, no good comparison could bo made between the Wellington, and other boards. When correspondence covering these facts was read at the board meeting yesterday, the board stood almost solidly against the Minister's request Mrs. M'Laron: I think the. recruits should be treated free. The Rev. H. Van Staveren! Certainly— if the Government pays for them. Mr. P.- T! Moore said (hat he was surprised at a Minister of the Crown making such a request. (It was the duty of tho Government—of the country as a whole—to pay such costs. The action of the committee which carried on the corresnondenco with the Minister was approved.
