WOMAN'S WORLD.
MATTERS OF INTEREST FROM FAR AND NEAR,
(By Imogen.)
SOCIAL AND PERSONAL
Navy League Collection Days,
Mw. Cameron, president of the Women's National Reserve, Lower Hutt, wishes to thank everyone who so kindly assisted her on Mrs. Henry Hall and Mrs. Matthew Holmes also wiaii to thank all who helped them with their stall and with donations. Every article was disposed of on these stalls. The street collection of last week was practically a woman's affair, having been planned and oarried out by women. 'Hie first- nieuting was on Monday, June 12; another meeting was called on the following day, and yet another, called by the Mayor, was held on the Wednesday. Collections were taken up on the following three days, and by Monday, June 19. tho greater part of the business was practically completed. Within a week, the -undertaking was organised, the money collected, and bills called in and passed for .payment—something of a, record in the way of dispatch surely. The largest amount of money taken in one collection box was <£ol 17s, ljd., and the next was £16 16s. BidSoldiers' Entertainment In the Town Hall. Another very pleasant evening arranged by the Mayor and his Entertainmont Committee was given in the large chamber of the Town Hall last evening for tho Fourteenth Reinforcements. A very large number of men were present, and the evening's entertainment, which consisted of dancing, music, and recitations, appeared to be thoroughly enjoyed. Mr. Dykes, Mr. Oulford Hell, Mr, Newton, and others assisted, with the programme, and musio for dancing was provided by Mrs. Myers, Mr. King and some of the ladies; present, Tho Mayoress and her committee needed many helpers t'q assist with the supper arrangements, but as usual'they'were equal to the occasion. The Mayor was present, and aa they left the hall at the close of the evening, the heartiest wishes for their welfare were expressed' to tho soldiers by their hostesses. .. G.F.S. Day of Intercession. The world-wido annual day of intercession of the Girls' Friendly Society was held yesterday. It had been arranged that from Great Britain and her overseas Dominions a cycle of continuous prayer should .be hiade. This year, it is of course' specially connected with the war, as thousands and thousands of G.F.S. associates and members have soldier relatives or friends somewhero in the fighting line. In the Dominion the oftort which the women throughout the British Empire have made can hardly perhaps be fully realised. The part that tlie G.F.S. is playing in this great work may be imagined when Mr. Lloyd George writes and thanks the G.F.S. in England for their big effort to provide lodgings for the large and increasing number of munition workers. The G.F.S. is not a wealthy, organisation, and it has meant much self-denial and labour on tho part of associates and members from England, France, Belgium, and Serbia. la the last-named country a G.F.S. associate writes that "it is a wonderful and terribly sad experience. Never, never shall we forget tho unutterable misery of the soldiers and prisoners." Sorvices yesterday in Wellington 'were, conducted in St; Peter's Church.. Navy .League Funds. Owing to a mutilation in the printing, tho sum of .£27, which liad been donated by. Miss Cooper and Miss Moss to tho Navy League Sailors' Dependant's' x'unil was inado to appear;.like £2' in yesterday's. Dominion. The net result of .'tho street collections takenpast week—Je794dbes not"" include the gift of several cheques'placed in'.the boxes, unci which in themselves aggregated some -,£ls, which -wero acknowledged as donations. On Wednesday the Navy League cabled to the : High Commissioner for Now. Zealand in London the. sum of ,£SOOO for immediate disbursement to those in need. The league is issuing appeals for funds throughout the country, and through tho courtesy of the Postmaster-General,-Sir Joseph Ward, these will be posted free. Sailors' Friend Society. ■ At the' Sailors' Friend Society 'last night Madame Mueller gave one of her popular concerts. Competitions were held at Intervals. As a result of temperance addresses eight men were induced to .sign. the. pledge. At tho close of an j enjoyable evening a warm vote .of thanks to tho performers was carried, and. was responded to by Madame Muellor. The following were performers :—Madame Mueller, Misses Dodds, Carringt'on, Mueller, Fairclough, M'Ghee, Messrs. Jones, Mason, Steenie, Boyco, Davics, Gaskin (Whakarua), and Ross (Cobar). Miss Dodds was at the piano.
Great praise was bestowed on Nurse Everitt by several members, of the- Wel-lington-Hospital Board yesterday for hei work-with the infantile •', paralysis cases admitted "to the Wellington Hospital. It was said that. Nurse. Bveritt had given up a great deal of her time to look after these stricken children, and that . hei treatment-had been very successful. Objection is taken by tho Wellington Hospital Board to the Nurses' Registra tion Act containing provisions to the effect that matrons of hospitals cannot bo appointed' without the consent of tho Health Department, nor nurses be discharged without the approval of the Department. The chairman of the board (Mr., H. Baldwin) said the board had never yet sought Departmental permisoion for such actions, and would declino to do so now. Mrs.. Helen Cross (Christchurch) ia visiting Wellington, and is staying at the Royal Oak. By tho way, the Easter bank holiday gave London an opportunity of .seeing girl munition-makers in festive attire. It was noteworthy how many of them were looking plump and well-fed, whereas, before tho war, one would have expected theru to be thin and anaemic' Tho reason for tho chango is tho big wages they aro receiving. Much of: the extra money is spent on food; somo is being.spent on good and warm material for clothes, instead of tbo old-timo shoddy. ' Lastly, the hairdressers tell us that not a little is being speut -upon manicurist and toilette articles, which promise a quick road to beauty. Muni-tion-making girls flock to the dressmakers' for. the latest "wave," and-think nothing of paying a manicurist's fee once a week! . One wonders what will happen wbeu tho slump in w&ges comes after the war.
National Reserve "At Home." A very successful "At home," in aid of the Red Cross Funds, was given by the members of tho Women's National Reserve at Johnsonville last Wednesday. The Rev. Mr. Petrio occupied the chair. Mr. R, A. AVright, M.P., was present and addressed tho gathering. Captain Donald Simson also. attended, and spoke on "Womens' Work During the 'War." There.was a short musical programme, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all present, after which supper was handed, round and various competitions took place. As tho result of this effort; the fund will benefit to the extent of .£25 Is. Gel., which should bo very gratifying to all t!«ose who worked to make" the entertainment such a success. Resolutions re War Regulations Bill. At a meeting of the Wellington die-. trict W.C.T.U., the following-resolu-tions were passed :—"That the executive of the Wellington district W.C.T.U. protest earnestly against the unlimited power to deal with venereal disease given to, the Governor-in-Countil by the War Regulations Bill, and urges ' that these powers be clearly defined by legislative enactment.- Resolved—further—. that the executive urges all" women's societies to keep vigilant watch lest any of the hateful provisions of the CD. Acts be surreptitioufsly impbsed -upon the enfranchised 'womanhood of- 'this Dominion." Teaching Them French, . In respect to the.6upply. of.French literature to, the transports, Mrs. G. W. Robinson wishes to .make known that an appeal has been ..made by. the Women's National Reserve in Christ-' church, and has been met.with a gratifying response, over 200 volumes having been received. .. '.These will .go forward with the next transports. Auckland and-Dunedin are to-be appealed to similarly for the.supply of., the. transports that may-be leaving, later, and it is proposed to ask Wellington.to supply' such literature for the September drafts. Thereafter the four centres will be appealed to in tho same rotation as long as the war lasts. Contributions ! will be received at the rooms of tho AVomen's Notional Reserve, 157 Fentherston Street.' In these days when:..it-is necessary.to practice economy one of the most'likely' places whero it is! possible to effect a saving is in the kitchen. - ■ Miss Carter, when .carrying out her gas" cookery ' de-' monstrations ,at .-..-.the- Gas'.Company's rooms in Coiirtenay Place, "always 'explains very clearly.how.to cook as much as possible at tho ■ one time, in order to reduce the gas consumption.' On AVechuisdiay • afitenoon the attendance was much larger than usual, a number of ladios not being • able to get into tho rooms, while others' were sitting and standing on the platform. Miss Carter gives numerous recipes, and all have the virtue,of inducing economy in : cooking. The work for tho afternoon comprised:—Dripping pastry, carnival tart, jam tart, stewed tripe aud savoury vice, pikelets, fish scallops, creamota scones, and peanut butter.
