POLICE CASES. Mr:- W. G. After hearing evidence, accused, who pleaded not guilty, were committed to the Supreme Court, for trial. A charge of-threatening behaviour on Waterloo Quay, likely, to provoke a breach of the' peace, was preferred against Henry Wesley Richards, assistantseoretary of the Federated Seamen's Union, and Anwoon Strenen, a Belgian, who was not represented by counsel. Mr. H. F. O'Leary - appeared for Richards, ivho' was discharged. Strenen was convicted and fined 205., as the Magistrate, held he'had been the, aggressor. Victor Cameron, for whom Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared, was charged with the theft of a" bag of sugar, valuo 175.. "belonging to the Wellington Harbour Board, on June 12. Accused pleaded not guilty. Evidence was given to the effect that Cameron, who is a carter, was seen to apparently hide a bag of sugar on his. dray. The tally clerk of tho Harbour Board, however, could not say that the board had lost a bag of • sugar.' The Magistrate allowed the police to alter the charge to "the theft of a bag of sugar ■ from some person unknown." But Air. O'Leary/held that there-was no. evi-. dence that a bag of sugar-had been stolen . at all. and after hearing further evidence j his Worship reserved judgment till Sat-, nrday nest. ■
