The.-proposal has 'been made on several occasions since local loans have been in prospect that Government; bonds orde-; bentures' should be accepted by the State For death duties; Mr. Wilford .recently made the suggestion that the Government ought to legislation to provide for this. .
The Right Hon. Sir J. G-. Ward (Minister of Finance) replied/ yesterday:' In the event of a war loan being raised' ill' New Zealand, war bonds, in paj'menb- of death duties could aot. be Death duties are imposed for- the purpose of. assisting the Consolidated-Fund, only, and, if the course' suggested were. adopted, {ho effect would be that in,,the future ,the Consolidated , Fund would suffer to the extent of moneys which 1 had. been utilised for war purposes,- and further taxation to the full amount withdrawn from the Consolidated Fund 'would bo necessary. '
