A GOOD YEAR REVIEWED NATIONAL DAIRY ASSOCIATION. (From Our Special Correspondent. Palmerston North, Juno 20. The twenty-second annual neeting of the National Dairy Association of NewZealand, Ltd., was held at the \fanawatu Show Grounds to-day. Mr. A. Morton (Egruont Village), chairman of ;he directorate, presided, and thero was a large attendance. The annual report and the balancesheet (already published) were submitted, and Mr. Morton, in moving their adoption, said that the season ini been a highly productive one, and prices had been abnormal. The high prices were :n a great measure'due to the war. In the last ten years the production of dairy produce had increased enormously, and he was. of. opinion that thero would be still further increases in tho.next lew years. The exceptionally hot weathar of the past season had to some extent affected the.quality of the produ;.c, and for' the future steps shoul dbe taken to guard-against such trouble. In the past year. New Zealand had been presgriltd with great opportunities on the i mid<.n butter market, as Denmark and other lands (including Australia) had not ejported to their usual extent. This led to the higher values which were being experienced to-day. The Imperial Army's need of cheese for the troops' nad caused a big demand for the New Zealand article.- ; ■
On tho subject of the shipping of cur produce, the producers owed Uianks to the association's Shipping Committee and to the Imperial Government. The Imperial Government had saved f7ew Zeu-' land producer's thousands of pounds by steps it had taken to prevent a further rise in freights. Mr. Morton'remarked on the large.number of dairy factory worker? who had B<me to the front, and he said that in order to maintain the quality ot our produce-it would bo necessary to secure certain exemptions. Tho Labour problem was bristling with difficulties and demanded close actentiou if our position in the-world's markets wus x to be niamtaiued. ■ •. '
I he. balance-sheet was the, best, whicU had been, presented .to members, expenses had been reduced to a minimum, and the membership showed.a substantial increase. The staff had worked excellently;, and their valuable work was highly appreciated by the association. Mr. H. D. Forsytlr (Eltham) urged factories which were standing out to join the association, through .whose existence they wore benefiting. Mr. Wise, (iiketahuua) thought the association should secure imprDvament in the marketing of cheese, and 'Afc. J. Marx (Alangatoki) appealed for an elt'ort to get better shipping facilities. . / i^ h f molion to adopt the report and .the' balance-sheet -was carried. " The retiring directors, Messrs. A. Mactarlaue (Pahiatua) and.W. Fisher (Carterton) 'were reelected, and Mr. l!dwa''d Allen (chairman of the Cambridge Dairy Company) was /elected to the vacancy caused by. the resignation of Mr. Hubbard (Paerou), who had joined the military. Forces. ,Mr. Pacey (Auckland) moved tho fbllowVJS resolution, standing in filename of ?v r : h V, A - M 'Connell,. of the Hunua Dairy Company :-"That this mdeting of representatives of dairy companies is of opinion that legislation should be ehacted : rwuiruig.eaoli dairy company in the Dominion to publish, within one calendar month after tho close of each: financal year, a statement duly attested by its auditor, such statement to contain particulars of its business as. follows:—(l)f She total pounds of butter-fat paid for and made into butter; (2) the total pounds or butter.made irom such, butter-fat: (3) the amount of butter made froni each pound of butter-fat; (1) the total pounds ot butter-fat paid for and made into cheese; (5)-the total pounds-of cheese made from such butter-fat; (6) the amount of cheese made from each pound of butter-fat.-" The purpose of the mo-' tion was to give suppliers a chanco of analysing the real prices being, paid foi butter-fat at different' factories,, and so B , „m m as to •■which .factory to supply, (the motion, was heavily defeated.) t Mr. Jjatten (Itiverdale) moved: "That now that war conditions have terminated the contract entered into three years- a"o between this association and the'shipping communes, it is the. wish of this meeting that before any future shipping contract be entered into by this association, a copy of the proposed ' contract be ssnt to, each member, and after a period of not less than thirty days a general meeting of the association be called to consider such a contract."
It was stated .that the contract had not been terniinated.aiid that the motion was looked upon as one of ,want of ■confidence in the association's executive, and that it was not the real .voice of the Kiverdale Company. At the vote, the motion found scarcely a supporter. Jfr. J. Marx (Manga toki) moved "That this meeting of dairy company representatives is of opinion that the time has come for, the dairy industry of New Zealand to join with the meat, wool, and other producers of the Dominion to take steps to become part owners in the overseas shipping required for the Dominions' oversea freightage.". The idea, was not received with a great deal of favour, and the motion was adjourned till next year. On.the motion of Mr. Marchnivi (Cardiff); seconded by Mr. Bracken (Rexdale), if was resolved: "That-the giving of personal guarantees to the brink by directors of the association is vicious in principle, and that it should be a recommendation from this meeting that the executive should circularise those factories that have not signed promissory notes urging them todischargo thoir obligations in this matter."
