A SOCIALIST RESOLUTION

AND HOW IT WAS TREATED. By Telegraph-Press Association-i i Christchurch, .Tune 19. a meeting of the City Council tonight a letter was received from "Mr. P. R. Cooke, who forwarded a Socialist resolution of protest 'against the action of the Mayor in refusing permission to Messrs. M'Combs, Webb, Ilinduiarsh, and Payne, M.l'.'s, to address a meeting in the city on Sunday. ' Councillor Otley moved that the letter be laid on the table. The Mayor said the meeting was purely a political one, in which the speakers wished to explain their position. He did not approve of giving permission to gentlemen to take up a collection when those gentlemen were getting J!300 a year each. There was ample time to hold political meetings on six days of the week without utilising Sunday. Many peopel in the Dominion strongly disapproved suoli meetings on the Sabbath. Another reason for his refusing to grant permission for the meeting was that the Military Service Bill had passed the Lower House, and there could bo no good done in further discussing it, but possible harm. "I don't think it is my duty to help gentlemen who ought to go to the front .and won't, but who- spent their timo in acting in manner which is liable to. dissuade other eligible men from enlisting," concluded His Worship. Councillor Otley's motion was carried.
