MAGISTRATE'S COURT

POLICE CASES,

Mr. 1,. G. Reid, S.M., occupied the Bench at tho Magistrate's Court yesterday, when tho following cases were dealt with:—

Eight first offenders for drunkenness were deult with iu the usual way. Evelyn Barr, for insobriety, was fined 205., in default forty-eight hours imprisonment. Victor Hall and William Lynch, for a similar offence, were likewise dealt with.

Joseph Hourigan pleaded not guilty to being a rogue and a vagabond. Tho evidence of the police was too strong, however, and accused was sent to prison for two months.

James Patrick Shivan was convicted and discharged on a clinrgo of 'having assaulted a female. Tho evidence showed that tho offence was of a very trivial nature.

James Oswald was fined 205., with costs 75., on a charge of cruelly ill-treating a horse.

A fine of 205., in default three days' imprisonment, was imposed on Harry Steel for having obstructed Constable Harks iu the execution of his duty. It was stated in evidence that the constable was on point duty at the Cuba and Manners Street intersection when accused went up to him and asked where he could get an Island Bay car. The officer told him "at the bank corner." Steel persisted in annoying tho constable, and he was told several times to go away. Finally he was arrested on the above charge.

Threo charges ivcro preferred against Grace Anderson, alias' Hanson, as'follow:—(]) Obscene language, (2) refusing to leave the Albion Hotel wlien requested to do so, (3) drunkenness. On the first charge she was fined 40s. in default seven days' imprisonment. A fino of 10s. was imposed on the second chargc, while accused, being a first offender, was convicted and discharged for drunkenness.

• , MAINTENANCE CASES. Maintenance cases were dealt with as under:—Thomas Francis Bustin. was ordered to pay Carroll Bernard O'Dannell tho sum of ,£2 off arrears (amounting to J!i lis.) within fourteen days, in default ono month's imprisonment. Benjamin Edo was ordered to pay Clara Eliza Edo tho sum of ,£1 off arrears (amounting to .£2) within fourteen days, with, the alternative of fourteen days' imprisonment. An order was made that Herbert Waring should be imprisoned for one month, tho warrant tc>' bo suspended if defendant pay 3 £.1 off arrears (amounting to <£16/45.) within ono week from date, and 2s. per week thereafter. Costa amounting __ to >61 Is. wero allowed. Cecilia M'Naughton was granted separation from and a' maintenance order at the rata of .61 per week against her busband, David M'Naughton. Ellen Jane Garrett applied, for separation, maintenance, and guardianship orders against her husband, Herbert Edward Garrett, and these were grantpd. Defendant was ordered to pay lis per week towards tho support of his wife and 3s. per week in respect of each child. Edith Alice Wiggins was granted a. maintenance order amounting to <£1. per .week against her husband, John Hugh Wiggins. Tho applicant was granted tho custody of "the child..
