: ——-rf-- ; DISHONEST COLLECTOR PUNISHED. Before Mr. W..G. Eiddell,'S.M., at the •Magistrate's Court bri Saturday, William Joseph. Wright, 32 years of age, pleade<l guilty to charges of having failed to ac- |, count for' the sum of ,£ll. ,Bs. 5d.; which he had, collected on behalf of his employers, the Wellington Bread Company. Inspector Hendrey gave the- accused a good character, and said that for years past lie''had been in, the employ of the Wellington-Bread Company; Accused had joined the Seventeenth Reinforceriients, and had been arrested at Trentliam. He was a married man. Gambling had been Wright's downfall, and this no doubt had. led to the thefts. That morning his wife had handed the whole of the misappropriated'money to a detective. . His Worship, addressing accused, said that it was most unfortunate that a young man like accused should, have given way in 'this' manner. As there was 'nothing previously known against him, and taking into . consideration the: fact that the' accused was agoing "away to fighfcfor his country, ho/would formally convict and order him'to come up for sentence if called upon. '. A STREET FRACAS. // " A3 a result of a street scuffle, Thomas Andrew. Parnell, a taxi driver,' and Frederick Alfred Fox, a soldier, appeared to answer a charge of, threatening. .behaviour in Lambton Quay. Fox pleaded guilty, while Parnell, for whom Mr.".;H. ' F. O'Lfiary .appeared, pleaded not .guilty. It", was''stated that Fox,; thinking/lie had been insulted by Parnell, went up/to. the latter and hit' him .in the eye. -"After hearing/the. evidence, the Magistrate held that Fox had been the - aggressor, and fined Innr 40s.y in default seven days' imprisonment. ■ Parnell /was discharged. , - OTHER CASES. .. i/. . Three,first offenders were convicted apd discharged for: drunkenness, while another, who! did not-appear, forfeited; (the amount of his bail, 10s/ Harry Dunn; a second offender, was fined 10s., in- default 48' hours'. detention. . //■■'.'•■. William Brady was "convicted and-dis-charged for 'drunkenness, and for tiio uso of-most, indecent language outside a .Salvation Army' Home was fined 40s. or.seven days'imprisonment. . • . Arthur Gray, who had used 'obscene language in . a tramca-r .when under the influence of liquor, was fined the alternative being fixed at 14 .days' .imprisonment. On .a charge' of drunkenness, Gray was formally convicted. . William Tally, who had-been arrested outside the Court on.Friday:during the hearing of the'case in which the antioonscriptionists were being prosecuted for having obstructed-- tlie'."'traffic. in/Ab'el Smith Street,_ appeared to answer a charge of having.used obscene language. A fine 'of ,£3, .with the option of 14 days' detention, was'imposed; - - - A remand till'to-day was granted in.the fcharged with- having assaulted Annie Crothers.
