"That this public . meeting of residents of Eastbourne, Day's Bay, and Lowry Bay desires to express its sense of the great loss the Empire has suffered through the tragic death of the late Earl Kitchener, Field-Marshal anil Minister for War, and joins with the rest of the Dominion in expressing appreciation of the inestimablo services, rendered to the. Empire by the lato Earl." . Sir John Findlay addressed the meeting. . He said wo owed our- greatness to the Navy ami our sailors. They were tho men. who had been tho means of making the greatest nation the world had over seen. We- owed a deop debt of gratitude to tho sailors who., liad laid down their lives in the great North Sea battle: on May 31, and we were not going •to seo their-: dependants left unprovided for..:' iThe'women who lost their loved ones- in that great light were equally as braye as the men, and they had taken their'bud news with the greatest courage. Mr. E. <T. Hill then sang "Kulo Britaniaia," tho chorus being sung by the audience.

.Mr. J. P. . Kelly said that wherever wej liked to travel in the British Empire wo -would find how great was the people's trvtst in the British Navy. Canada, Africa, India, Australia, New Zealand aft'had that faith. "And so'will tho Kaiser before we .are finished," was Mr. K elly's concluding remark.

On the motion cf the Mayor, seconded iljff- Mr. D. M. JTindlay, it was resolved j.Sinanimously: "That this public meeting of residents j»'jf Day's Bay, and Lowry u Bay-decides to establish a branch fund < to assist the Navy League in ameliorat- ; ing the lot of widows, orphans, and deI pendants of British sailors killed or disabled in the present war between Gerj many and the Allies." ' _ Mr. M. C. Hickmont sang "Lads in Navy Blue," the chorus being accompanied by the.audience. " The Mayor then said that they had now come to the business of the evening; He had done a little personal canvassing, and had raised a very, nice sum of money ,to go towards the Navy League Fund, but', "he was prepared to receive more. Donations were immediately offered from all over the hall, and a total amount of' .£206 was subscribed. It decided : to continue to receive voluntary subscriptions. ' , '

Acting upon a suggestion from a gentleman in the audience, Mr. E., J. Hill said ho would promise 'to take over a concert party-better than had ever been seen at Eona Bay,' provided they would guarantee three hundred two shilling, tickets. offer was accepted; and the Mayor saifl be would advise Mr. Hill as soon as the tickets were sold. At the "korero" of the Orphans' Club, held oji Saturday evening last, a collection was taken up in aid of the naval widows and orphans of tho late North Sea battle, .£lO being collected. Orphan C. C. Oiiliu, on behalf of bis parents, who are over 80 years of age, added to the collection by giving a cheque for *825, making the total collection J!35 : Loud cheers greeted this generous offer, and thanks-were given to C. C. Odlin. The following resolutions -were carried in silence"That the Wellington Orphans' Club deplores the tragic death of Earl Kitcheuer, who gave his great gifts unstintedly for the protection of our Imperial interests, and set a standard of faithfulness to duty that evokes our highest admiration, and is an inspiration to the whole people of the British Empire." "That the Wellington Orphans' Club marks with high appreciation of the great service rendered by our gallant seamen in the great North Sea battle,' and expresses its condolence with the relatives of those who have delivered up their lives and suffered with the call of duty." , '

The Mayoress presided over a. meeting of, the Ladies' Patriotic Committee on Friday' afternoon. Four new members were elected, they being Mrs. P. Hill. Mrs.. F. Hedges, Mrs. 0. Johnson,, and Miss l'atlle. It was decided to collect funds for the sailors' dependants.- Collectors were appointed for both town and country. All boxes are to be in by July 1. Instead of Bending parcels to the firing line iii France, it was decided to forward a sum of .05' monthly. The ordinary gift parcels sent by relatives and friends to soldiers-will, of course, go forward monthly as usual. •
