Fighting bravely, and with the splendid spirit of,the naval,family from which lie had' sprung, he went to his doom amid the roar of. guns and shouts of "England for ever!" Born in the Old Country, and the - son of a retired Royal Naval captain who is still living, tho man who combined: in a commanding personality greats force, of ■ Character and goodness of-lieart,.'.commenced, his practical experience in tlie service to which he was so .unwaveringly devoted as a midshipman on the Nelson, which was (hen oii the Australian Station,, under Commander Erskine. , With the passing of years the promoted midshipman in 1901 married in- England Mabel, youngest daughter of the "ate Hon. William Laidley, of . Hillside, EdgeclifF Road. The Australian wife of the gallant officer was the mother of two'sons and two daughters, ivlio survived her when she died four years ago.
; Captain Cny 'was 48. In the service from boyhood, lie rose to the rank of captain nine years ago. 'When the Entente Cordiale was effected lie went to Paris as fine captain with Admiral Hay, and played a part in the memorable celebrations. One wlio knew Captain Cay well said of him: "While a typical British sailor 011 duty, he was a Christian 'gentleman in thought, word, and deed. With him service 111 the Imperial Navy was a passion—not a profession in the ordinary sense. Yet lie found time for sport, and, loved to see his men happy. An enthusiastic footballer, he was the leading spirit in this game. Courageous, conscientious, high-principled, and transparently honest, I am sure lie was not afraid to face death."
