NAVY DAYS

NAVY LEAGUE'S FINE EFFORT j PROMISING RESULT Yesterday was Navy Day, so is to-day and to-morrow. This by way of explanation that tho Navy League's effort on behalf of Iho dependants of tho men of the Navy who lost their lives in. tho pre. scut great struggle for-, freedom and liberty might be known. To those who stay «t home is left the duty and privilege of seeing, that such people do not suffer from want after sacrificing their breadwinners, and, as far as Wellington is concerned, the Navy League's branch here is announcing that now is the time to offer that helping hand to those in distress in the Old Country. A start was made at short notico yesterday, but, thanks to tho good work of a willing body of ladies and gentlemen, the eifort was altogether satisfactory—for a first day'. The ladies were out bright ami early, selling badges of national colours, tiny pois mado of red, white* and blue ribbon, sweets, cigarettes, tobacco, etc.; anything in fact, that would yield a result in hard cash for the fund, arid as a. result the sum of .£2GS 6s. lid. was collected. Many of tho ladies were in charge of little street stalls, well stocked with diversified goods calculated to catch the eye, and please the appetite, and all of them did excellent business. It is expected, however, that to-day's result will be much better, and that to-morrow's will cap tho total with a really substantial amount. In the meantime the league makes an, earnest appeal to everyone to send in contributions; either to the league's secretary (Mr. C. W. Palmer) or the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), at the Town Hall. An appeal is also being mado to people in the country, who are out of direct touch with the city movement, to help swell the total for the relief of the poor women and children whose breadwinners have given up their lives so cheerfully and gallantly for tho Empire and us all. . The following are the latest additions to the Na.vy League's Fund:— • ' £ s. d. Acknowledged to date 323 13 3 Mr. and Mrs. 6. M. Kebbell ... 15 15 o Messrs.
