MAGISTRATE'S COURT SERIES OP CHARGES AGAINST A YOUNG MAN r * W* G* liiddell, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday, and heard the following charges:— A young man named Frederick Marshall, alias Alartiu, was charged with the theft of a purso containing £2 in money ancl a gold ring to the value of «,®-. the property of Prank Benton, ot Kilbirme; forging the name of Harry Church to a cheque lor the sum of <£4 and uttering the same to Herbert Price; forging the .name of Frank Martin to a cheque for the sum of .£5 and uttering the same to William Ashley Louisson, an assistant in the D.i.C. j committing theft of various articles valued at <£42, the property of Florence Paulsen, licensee of the Carlton Hotel; obtaining the sum of- .£-1 from Cecil llule by means of a valueless cheque, with intent to defraud. There were also three charges of false pretences at Napier .and one at: Hastings. Chief-Detective Boddam conducted the case for the prosecution, while the accused was jiot represented by oounsel, To the first three charges the accused pleaded not guilt}-, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. In respect to the charge of stealing oertain articles from tho Carlton,Hotel, the accused after protesting that he received the articles and did not steal them, eventually pleaded guilty, and was committed' for sentence. Ail interesting story of Marshall's adventures was told in Court, and the accused cross-examined witnesses very freely and with an air of confidence. At the hearing of the. fifth charge in the afternoon accused asked permission to withdraw his former plea of not guilty, and pleaded guilty to all five charges. He was committed to the Supreme Court for. sentence. In regard to the offences alleged to have been committed at Napier and Hastings, Marshall was remanded to June 21. Bail was not asked for. It is probable that he 'will be remanded to' Napier subsequently. , DISHONEST COLLECTORS PUNISHED. Two men—Clarence -John Evans and Alfred William Harrington—in the employ of the ; Denhard Automatic Bakery Co., Ltd.; pleaded guilty to having col. Iccted money from customers and failed to account for same to the firm. The amount alleged to have been collected by Evans was stated to bo £i 95.,2 d .( and by Harrington >C 5 18s. lid. Chief-Detective Boddam said that Evans was a young married man with two ohildren, and . Tie was willing to make good the, loss ■ to. the firm. His Worship, addressing. the liccused, said that "under the circumstances he would , give him a chance, but he could not understand why he lad done such a thing, bringing disgrace oh himself and his young family. In respect of Harrington, His Worship told him that he \vas old enough to know better at his time of life. Both accused were .convicted and ordered.to como up for sentence when called upon, provided the amounts taken were returned within fourteen days. OTHER'. CASES. ■ A fine of 10s., in default three days' imprisonment,' was imposed on Alfred Weilson for insobriety. William David Cremer and James ]?arrelly, alias Spenoerly, were charged with breaking and entering the house of Daniel Tonkins, in Taranaki Street, oa June 13. On the application of Inspector Hendrey a Temand was granted till June 21. ' Part evidence was heard in a case in which it was alleged that Charles Hector Dudley had forged the name of Gv Williams to a cheque for <£21 drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Nelson, and had uttered it to'a shopkeeper. Further hearing will take place on June 21.® For deserting from the steamship Mamari, 'a fireman named Alfred Kingston was sentenced to forty-eight, hours' imprisonment. Ho was placed on board before the vessel sailed yesterday.

SUPPLYING A NOXIOUS DRUG
