A NEW PATRIOTIC GUILD
A representative and most enthusiastic gathering of Roman Catholio women interested, in patriotic -work filled St. Patrick's Hall to overflowing yesterday afternoon, when a meeting was convened to consider the advisability of forming a Working Guild to provide knitted comforts for soldiers. The ohair was occupied by the Rev. Father O'Connell, S.M., tho Rev. l'athor Hurley, S.M., also being present. ■' 'A scheme of work: was outlined, the City and suburbs being divided into parish districts, each being placed under the care of a guild leader. The guild leaders will'form a sub-committee, meeting monthly, when they will report to the Executive Committee on the work of their respective districts. Tho following were elected to form the Executive 'Committee:—President, Miss A."C. Kennedy; secretary,; Mrs. A. Wheeler; trea-, surer, Mrs. J. J. L. Burke, with Mrs. Mackin, Mrs.J.' J. M'Grath, Mrs. G-am-ble, Mrs. Corrigan, Miss M. Collins. The sub-committee of guild.leaders consists of: Miss, Ilendrys (Thorndon), Mrs. O'Snllivan (St. Joseph's), Miss O'Connor (St. Mary's), Miss Agnes Segrief (St. Anne's), Mrs. M'Keown (Brooklyn), Mr. Chamberlain (Island Bay), Mrs. Cornish (Seatoun), Miss M. Blake (\Vadestown); Mrs. M'Carthv Reid ("Upper Hutt), .Miss Campbell (Karori and Northland), Miss Wvnne (Kelburn), Mrs. Young (lulbirnie); Miss Mulvaney (Catholic Hostel). . It was resolved that a guild be formed, to ])e known as tho .Wellington Catholic Knitting Guild, its objects bemg-(l) lo provide knitted comforts for soldiers at the'front, through the chaplains, ■ by means of the Service Fund; (2) for the sick and wounded, through the. iintish Red Cross Society; (3) through the New Zealand chaplains for friendless men in oamp. It was explained that the various com.mittees, under the guild leaders, would meet regularly in their. various distnots. Instruction would be given to workers where necessary, and. honorary membeis, both men and women, willing to donate wool or the means of buying the same, would be welcomed to the guild. A collection taken in tlie Toom amounted to about ,£3O, in addition to various promises of financial assistance. The executive desires to express its hearty thanks to those who so generously contributed. After the general meeting the executive and sub-committee met and arranged a plan of campaign. St. Mary's Guild was Heid in the. Diocesan Rooms on Tuesday morning, Miss Coates presiding. The report stated that the. homes were full and that the health of the girls was good. Tho third home recently acquired for children is now furnished, thanks'to the generosity of many friends; The ladies of the guild are. now making a special effort to collect the sum . of £500 in order to ensure the payment of interest for five years on/the purchase money of the third home. Mr. C. H.-St. Hill, of Napier, with ■ Mrs; vSt.;-IJiU. and ' daughter, • have, re'turned from- a visit to Australia.
