CAMPS AND THE MEN

FOURTEENTH A.S.C. OFFICERS ALLOCATED The I'onrtcenth Reinforcements of the A.S.C., uiuler Lieutenant Lowe, camped at Martin's Ford, near Martinborough last night, in the course of their three days' trek through the Southern Wairarapa. The draft, which consists of 45 men with eight wagons, is undergoing actual service' conditions ivhile on the road. To-day it was to march to Runmahanga Bridge, bivouacking in the road for tho mid-day meal. The camp to-night will be at lluamahanga Bridge, and the return to .camp will be made tomorrow. After this month, A.S.C. drafts will leave with alternato Reinforcements instead of with every one, as at present. Good Horsemanship. Tho high standard of horsemanship which is,'attained by many officers and men of the A.S.C. was demonstrated in a pretty piece of work which took place on the roadsido while an A.S.C. company was halted. There was some green sward beside the road. A peg of soft wood was driven into the ground and an officer, taking a lance out of one of the wagons, mounted and tilted at tho. peg. His first two attempts l were quite successful. Then ho produced a. sword and rode at the peg again. Again he struck the peg in tho centre, but. it refused to stick to tho sword point. "Not enough pace," was his comment. "She sees that pool of water ahead and wants to 6low and swerve." "You've got the trick," the civilian eaid. , "r' 0 - trick about it," was the reply. 'It s just horsemanship and pace." It certainly was an interesting sight for the passers-by on the road. Officers Allocated.
