SAVAGE CLUB

The opening proceedings at the Savage Club's korero on Saturday evening partook in a measure of the nature of a brief memorial' service in honour of the late Earl Kitchener. Chief Savage Marcus Marks occupied the chair, and, after delivering a short address, moved the following resolution, which- was carried in silence while the members stood:— "That the 100 members of tile Wellington Savage Club deeply deplore the lamented death, of I'ield-Maishal Earl Kitchener, Secretary ,of . State for . War,, aiid records its admiration of his distinguished services ,to the .Empire. as a soldier and a statesman, and further desire to express its deep sense of Borrow at the great loss which the jirmy and the nation have. sustained by his death."

The club's orchestra then played a Verse of the National Anthem, followed ;by Chopin's Funeral March,- the members of the club still standing. ■ ■ , Later oh in the evening the Chief Savage presented a further resolution to the club, at the same time inviting members to subscribe to the fund for the widows and orphans of the sailors who lost their lives in the battle of the Skager Rack. This resolution, which was carried with loud applause and the singing of "Rule, Britannia," was as follows;—" That the' Wellington' Savage Club desires to express its deep sense of gratitude to the British Navy for the magnificent manner in which it has sustained the glorious traditions of the past, and to offer its sincere tlianks to Admiral Sir John: .Tellicoo-and all his splendid men for the brilliant victory achieved over the German Fleet ,in the recent naval engagement in tho North Sea." The sum of ,£B6 was subscribed in the room, anrl this amount will no doubt'be further increased by absent members. •
