HEAVY FIGHTING,ON THE ' BRITISH FRONT
Plain statements of facts 'in tho official comaLunifjues have'hitherto ' comprised practically the sole link between tho outer world and the farflung firing l line on the Russian European 'front. Correspondents' dis- : pitches are now arriving, and'these form to-day a thrilling supplement to the official matter-of-fact refcital of the development of what is now - acknowledged to be the most Titanic blow of the war. We are told to- : day how General Brusiloff, who succeeded Ivanofi in the Russian southern. command in the European theatre, and who before that was known as a brilliant cavalry leader, launched his lightning thrust at the Austrian line along over 300 miles of front; how a terrific burst of artillery withered and blasted the Austrian defences; how masses of Russian infantry were burled at the breaches regardless of loss; and how, with: morale-shattering rapidity, wheeling divisions of cavalry 6truck fdr in. the Austrians' rear, flanking, encircling, and pursuing. Whether 6ays one correspondent, the Germans in the centre and the north can, either by a diversion or by dispatch of reinforcements, aid the Austrians in their present predicament remains to be 6een. They have made no move as yet. On the Western battle-front, the German attacks on ■Verdun continue, and heavy fighting is reported from the British front. Italy is at present absorbed in a political crisis, and tliero is no news from the Trentino—none, at > least, had come to hand when these lines were written. The new situation with Greece is stated to have created a feeling of pessimism in Berlin.
