Red Cross Society , Pot in Nathan's' Buildings continues u quietly and effectively for the benefit or sick and wounded soldiers who i?" 6 , ltt jNSPikls in -,Egypt, Prance, and England. According to a report supplied, the number of lady„workers has gradually increased, while, t'he malo members of the brigade have also been, lending a hand to cut, out carpet' clipper soles and to . make cases. .. : . , ~ ' '• In another column, there is published a duly audited statement of receipts aud expenditure, which shows that there was a balance in hand oii June 1 of >E49i 16s. Dd.' The oonimittee- is very-gratified at •(having, such-an excellent balance, especi--nilly in view,of the-faot: that arrango, ments are, shortly being : made to send 'substantial sums to. Franco, and to England for the purchase of comforts and equipment,, which. can bo more readily and more cheaply- obtained there than Sn New Zealand:.. Donations-have been thankfully "received,.and will always be cordially welcomed, .from' many and • varied soh'rces. It will be observed from the statement'that tho sum of .£390 has been expended. during the past - two lnonths upon material, etc., for the making of the various necessary garments for 'hospital use, and upon invalid foods, etc. It will therefore ' lie understood that while the balance, in hand is very satisfactory, the committee-would like to seo it congderably, increased, as the scope 'of their operations is extending -week by week.' The"Napier Nursing Division ot the St. John;, Ambulance Brigade has kindly promised'(per Mrs. T. H. Lowry) to contribute .£lO per month towards the Cost , of invalid ~ foods, of which 60mo ■twenty cases have been dispatched per recent transports. During the past two months there have ■ also been dispatched from ;tlio depot 75 bales and 11 cases of hospital equipment of all sorts, of tho total value It would, no tbavo been .possible to dispatch such a .largo and .valuable quantity, of. good? but for the contributions of ;country .Red. Cross Societies, who continue to respond magnificently to : the., call, for assistance in Red- Crass work. It has been exceedingly gratifying to receive advice during the piist week from the Lieut.-General Commanding Now Zealand Expeditionary forces that itwo consignments of 15 bales, each have safely arrived at their destination, and were gladly welcomod. Advice has also been received that the.various articles, of equipment and 1 , comforts which were placed on board transports-for the nse of sick and wounded soldiers returning to New Zealand. were much. appreciated by the. recipients.. Of the goods which have been dispatched'recently, some have been addressed to the St. John Anibulance Brigade Hospital at Etaples, France, some to St. John's Gate, > London, and some to Egypt. : . • The committee is very, appreciative of /splendid assistance rendered ..by the em-; ployees of Messrs. Roberts (N.Z.), Ltd. Through the kind interest of the manager (Mr'. ; Morinie) and. his| wife,- it was arr ranged that the'girls iu the workroom in Wakefield Street .'would- give up their Saturday afternoon holiday .and .do some Red Cross.work ; for -the brigade; ' T.he materia! having" been-forwarded. to the factory earlier in the week, and the garments' cut out by Mr. -Monnie, the girls' set to work on the Saturday, afternoon and made 96 shirts—a most valuable contribution. . The committee* continues to supply material and patterns to schools and to country, sooieties.' . If the.- schools • or country societies have any funds in hand,'they pay for the material.supplied, but, if no funds are available fo'r that purpose the material is forwarded, and the.
garments ill either case are returnod to tile depot wlicu completed. '■ The committee owes a debt of gratitude to the ladies (Mrs. Fletcher Reilly and Mrs. Murray Thomson) who manage the Red Cross Shop in Woodward Strcot, and who donate the profits which are made to the funds of the depot. A tremendous lot of hard work has been entailed, but they feel quito 'compensated for it by tiio- splendid financial result of their effort. It will bo seen from the balancoelieot that a profit of .£165 JOs. 3d. has been, made in tho past two months. A profit of ,£66 19s. !)d. was made during the preceding two mouths, which shows a total profit since tho opening of the shop on .February 19 of .£232 10s., which result is most gratifying to the two ladies mentioned and their assistants. The shop is open on four days in each week—on Wednesday, iu charge of a committee from Seatoun, an Thursday in charge of ii committeo from Lyall Bay, and on Friday aud Saturday in charge of the two ladies above-mentioned. In connection with, the shop two stalls are taken into the street on days on \vhich the troops parade. One stall is situated ou those days, on the Economic corner, and the other on tho Bank of New Zealand corner. Permission is also granted to tho ladies to tako their stalls to tho wharf on the occasions of departure of troops, and appreciation ~has' been freely expressed' by the public of tho opportunity afforded of purchasing- farewell gifts of sweets, fruit, cigarettes, .etc., for the departing boys,- and at the same time helping the good causp. ; The ladies keep a very care-ful-account of all'amounts received, and .of .the'expenditure which is necessary to supplement-the. gift stock of the shop and stalls; a detailed .uccount of receipts aud expenditure is displayed in the shop, in order. that any member of the public who desires to do so may peruse it. Purchasers from the Red Cross Shop or from the stalls mentioned above are thus given an .opportunity of assurance that the profits derived from their purchases are devoted to Red Cross work. A further source of revenue for the depot is the sale of flowers on Saturday mornings. The flowers are sent over from Nelson, and are sold by Miss Macamlrcw and. her assistants, half tlie profits from the sales being forwarded to the Nelson Red Cross Society and the other half paid into the depot account. The commit-tee-also desires to acknowledge with best thanks- the receipt of various sums which represent, the profits made at the Petone Red Cross Shop, and also of the various other amounts which are-shown, in the statement published herein,- as having been."received..
