MINISTER'S VIEWS
SEE THAT HEN ABE REGISTERED. 11l an. interview yesterday, the Minister of Defence (the Hon. J. Allen) stated that he was highly gratified, with the reception accorded to the Military Service Bill by the House of Representatives. The amendments made, he said, had not affected the principle of the measiire, but had been in the direction'of making the Bill more acceptable in some minor details. One amendment that h® considered. to bo of great importance, and which he had had inserted, was that providing for the subdivision of Division 1 into classes. This would allow single men without dependants to ba oalled iip before single men with dependants, 'lne clauses dealing with notifications and hearings of appeals had been altered in the < direction of removing any possible injustice. The penalties were heavy, and the powers given to the police in Tegard to shirkers were extensive, but these provisions' wore necessary. "I would like to point out," added the Minister, "that it will be to the interest of everybody who is ion the roll to see that every other man liable to serve is also registered. The more men that are registered, the less likely will it be that any individual man will be called upon. For instance, if there are a hundred eligible men in a certain district, and only. fifty of them are registered, the chances of those fifty being drawn when a ballot is taken will be doubled. Every man of military' age ought first to see that he is registered, and secondly to see that every other man who should be registered is on the roll. As the rolls will be exhibited at the. post offices, this will be an easy mattor, and it will be a' perfectly fair and proper thing to do."
