NOTES AND COMMENTS

[By Gi.encoe."]

Up till 9 p.m. to-morrow Secretary W. .T. .Stratton, of. the' Hawke's Bay Jockey Club, will, receive entries for. nil- events at'the winter meeting of. his el'ub.

At Greenlaiic, on "Tuesday, Mr. E. W. Alison, Ju'n.j submitted several of the yearlings which he bought in. Australia »t the .autumn sales, but' tlio majority failed to'-find' purchasers.. The sales effected c. ..by "Sands of the Orient—Golden Dawn, 70gn'S;, Mr. J. Col I is, Anckl«nd; br. e. by Wauken Phast—Atjnilinc, 50gns., Mr.' Hv. Davidson', Whangarei: At 'the same sale 1: the aged gelding Hohungatah'i was sold for llgns. to Mr. J. Taylor, Auckland.

Lady Bibbero, runner-up to ' Mollyhawk in the Hunt Club Steeples at Ellerslie, is engaged, in the big jumping events at Gisborne, and'may prove to be Braeburn's most fbnnidabj.& opponent. The maTe was anchore<l with a big weight yesterday,' and as she is not a big one, this would be all against her. West week at Gisborne she wilt only have the minimum impost.

' Acccptances for the Gisborne meeting ■ close to-morrow 'flight. ■ .

When successful in tho Campbell Hurdles at. Ellerslie yesterday, the Lethe maro Pursefiller gave a surprisingly good return, and as the stako was worth 100 fiovs., her owner would be recompensed to 6omo extent for the mare's failure in tho Great Northern Hurdles.

'The black gelding Tarero lias proved a good stake earner for his owner. J. Cameron, and in each of liis trins north lie has secured a good stake. Yesterday he started favourite in the Winter Steeples, and scored decisively. On the same course, at tho Easter meeting, he won the Autumn Steeplechase, and tho following week stored at A'vondale. He would have been one of the early fancies for the Wanganui and Great ern Steeples had ho not gone slightly wrong just after the entries closed. His three successes were worth 950 sovs., in stake money. •

In' the Tamaki Steeplechase at Ellerslie yesterday, Mr. Jas. T BuU's' New Tork scored, his first win over country, though in previous races he'has always shaped in a .promising mfcnner. New York is bred to jump, being from Karaka, who left Mnhoe, a winner of the Century Hurdles.

The groy steeplechaser Daylight Bill has not been out of the paddock since returning- from the Wanganui meeting last month, and the Stronghold gelding may not be taken up again; his wind having become much worse lately.

The Eiccarton trainer-owner M. Hobbs leaves for Australia by to-day's boat, and will take six horses with him, namely, Reva.l, Silent Way, Corrie, Peg, Deltonia, and Down. All have been doing steady work and should soon strike form 011 tho other side of the water. C. Emerson goes over by next week's boat, and will, it is understood, ride the horses in {heir Hat engagements.

The death occurred at Masterton on Friday ; of Mr. Henry Dixon,' a former Hastings trainer. As a lad, he was oon-

netted -with Mr. J. Maeara's stable. In recent yeans ho had resided at Hastes, until ill-health compelled him to relinquish his occupation. Polymolus,' sire of Fifinella, winnor of tliis year's Derby and Oaks, and Pommen, last season's Derby winner, is by Cyllene —Maid Marion and is therefore a lialf-.bi-othei- to Grafton, who was so successful at the stud in Australia. Sir. G. D. Greenwood left last week on a visit to Australia. It is understood that the stallion I) ami be, by Martian — Neva, was sent to Australia by the same boat. Danube lias been extensively used by Mr. Greenwood at his Teviotdale stud, but so far lie lias not proved a great success as a sire, and will probably finish on his owner's station in Queensland. ' Emperador has thrown olf the lameness which troubled him at Wanganui. '['hough he is now walking quite soundly, his trainer, R. J. Mason, is by no means sanguine about his chance of getting tho brilliant gelding to stand another preparation. _ It is probable tliaf Nones will be nominated this week for somo of tho big snring races in Australia, The Comedy King—Air Motor yearling may also bo put into a number of Australian events. He is- an early foal, and this fact should bo a useful asset for spring two-year-old events.. It is, however, by no means certain yet that I?. J. Mason will take any of Mr. G. D. Grenwood's horses to Australia this year. Tho Caulfield Cup entries total 231, compared with 21G last year. For tho Australian Hurdles 55 are enteral,, compared with 60 Inst year, and for the Steeples 59, compared witll 78.—Press Association. Wallalo, a former winner of the Australian Cup, has been sold to an Indian buyer for 550 guineas—Press Association.

FIXTURES.

June 15 and 17.—Gisborne E.C. Steeplechase. June 23 and 24.—Napier Park R.C. Winter. June 30 and Juiy L—Hawke's Bay' J.C.' Winter.
