TRAGEDY OF THE HAMPSHIRE PAINFUL SENSATION THROUGHOUT THE EMPIRE By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, Juno 6. Admiral Jellicoe reports:— "H.M.S. Hampshire, with Lord Kitchenor and Staff on board, was sunk on Monday night at 8 o'clock, west of the Orkney Islands, cither by a mine or torpedo. "Four observers on shore saw foil l- boats leave the ship in heavy seas. "A patrol vessel and destroyers immediately proceeded'to the spot. ''The searchers up to the present have only found some bodies in a capsized boat. "I greatly fear there is little hope of survivors. "The Hampshire was going to Russia." The War Office states:—Lord Kitchener's party consisted of Lieut.-Colonel James Fitzgerald, Military Secretary; Brigadier-General Ellershaw, Lieutenant MacPherson, Mr. Hugh O'Bcirne, of the Foreign Office; Sir H. Donaldson, and Mr. L. Robertson, of the Ministry of Muntions; Detective MacLaughlin, of Scotland Yard, and five personal servants and clerks. OBJECT OP THE VISIT TO RUSSIA (Ecc. Juno 7, 5.5 p.m.) London, Juno 0. The Press Bureau has since announced that Lord Kitchener was visiting Russia at the Tsar's invitation. The Russian Government had requested that Lord Kitchener, Mr. O'Beirue, Sir H. Donaldson, and Brigadier-General ' Ellersliaw should take an opportunity of discussing important military and financial questions. COUNCIL OF WAR SUMMONED (Rec. June 1, 5.5 p.m.) London, June 6. A British Council of War iras immediately summoned and sat for two hours. Sir William Robertson (Chief of the Imperial General Staff), Sir Edward Grey (Foreign Minister), Mr. M"Kenna (Chancellor of the Exchequer), and Mr. Lloya George (Chief Munitioner) attended. The King hurriedly returned to town and summoned Mr, Asquith' to Buckingham Palace.
