NOTES AND COMMENTS

[By Glekcoe.]

At EUerslie to-dny the Great Northern Steeplechase Meeting will bo brought to a conclusion. Tho principal flat race is tho York Welter Handicap, one niile. Loloina, who was successful in the Cornwall Handicap on Saturday, has only 101b. more than she won with, and the distance is a/quarter of a mile less. On previous occasions E; JlacManemin's niaro has shown her best form oyer ( short courses. Of course the top-weight, Bluestone, list. 41b., will bo well * fancied, and the grey gelding will probably essay to win the same double as he scored last year, viz.,' tho York AVolter and the rareWell Handicap. Of the. remainder in the York Welter Handicap! Aurore, who is in at the minimum, may be the best. The big Karamu.-geiding got badly left in his race on Monday and then finished fourth.

'In the Farewell Handicap Bluestone, list. 71b., is up against some very 6mart sprinters, several'of whom can act well in the mud. Amongst these may be mentioned 'l'atterley, Glenroy, and Marimba. The last-named has' only got 91b. above the minimum. - All, tho Birkenhead stock act well in heavy going and it will be no surprise to find Marimba well up today, as she meets her fields on much better terms. On ' Saturday Bluestone. was conceding her 91b., against 261b. to-day, so on figures Mr/ L. M'Kenzie's mare lias mucji the best of matters.

In. tho Winter Steeples the public may send the consistent Waimai out as first choice. E. Kae's charge is a bold fencer and was the closest to El Gallo in the Great Northern . Steeples. A good stayer lie will be quite at home over the Ellerslie course.

Gladful, wlio finished just behind the placed division in the Great Northern Hurdles,-may have the largest following in the Campbell Hurdles in which lie has been dropped lib., and of the lot engaged in the Fitzroy Handicap Pendoon may be fancied most, but sho may find it very hard to present Master-Regal with 101b. The latter has won several flat races, as well as being a successful performer over fences.

July 12, 13, and 15 are the dates, arranged. for the. AVellington Club's Winter Meeting.

Ivopu \is among the latest horses to ba put into work in Hawke's Bay. He was a useful.horse a few seasons ago, but ho has not, .raced since December, 1913. and as he is in his tenth year, 110 does not look a. particularly good. prospect.

Mr. W. J. Stratton has been elected a life member of the Hawke's B.ay Jockey Club, of which ho was for many years the secretary.

El Gallo set the seal on his fame when lie appropriated for the second time the big double at'. Eilerilrj,. The Spalpeen •gelding is the first horse to accomplish nils feat, aiid can safely rank with the best 'chasers of ljy-gone years.' He was fortunate to meet weak fields in both events, but this is the luck of the game. •Mr. W. J. Ralph's horse is entered for the Nationals at Melbourne, but whether he will be sent over is not known yet. He is'not likely to receive.anything like the consideration he got from the Auckland weight adjuster, and with a big weight up in a three miles hurdle race, and w bigger one in a three miles steeplechase, he would be quite likely to meet with a reverse.

Owners of jumpers engaged at the Gisbome Meeting next week should note that acceptances close 011 Friday night.

Friday next is general entry'day for .tlio Hawked Bay. Jockey Club's Winter Meeting, to be held on June 30 and July 1.

DEELEYn'S appeal upheld

Private advice received from Auckland last .night-stated tliat-the appeal of li. JJeeley against his three months' suspension for alleged interference with Thoolomi in the Auckland Welter Handicap at- JCllerslio 011 Easter Monday had been upheld.
