A NAPIER JURY'S VERDICT
THE JUDGE'S CAUSTIC COMMENT. " By Telegraph—Press Association. Napier, June 6. Short but caustic comment was made by the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) at the Napier Supremo Court yesterday npon the verdict of the jury in respect to the case of a youth named Stephen Percy Barrett, charged with breaking and entering tho "esidonee of ilr. Sam Wood, Colenso Hill. After hearing the evidence His Honour summed up strongly against the prisoner. "Were tho jury to return a verdict of not guilty," said His Honour, "they would b9 acquitting a man who had practically declared himself guilty."
The jury retired and within half an hour returned with a verdict of not guilty-
The Foreman: I would liko to explain to Your Honour that tho jury's verdict has been based on the unreliability of the statements of the accused.
His Honour (interrupting): I am not going to aripie with you. This is tho second occasion on which a Napier jury has brought in <\ verdict of not guilty when an admission of guilt has been made by accused, and tho police evidenco was conclusive. Tho verdict was tantamount to accusing tho polico officers of perjury.
