MISHAP TO THE OPOURI
MAGISTERIAL INQUIRY.

A Magisterial inquiry was held to-dny before Mr. T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., and Captains Murray and Hutchipson, assessors, into the mishap to . the steamer Opouri, off Waipapa Point, on April 21, when on a voyage from Greymouth to Lyttelton. Arthtlr Person, A.8., said it was blowing Jialf a gale, and he was steering south by west, when ho felt a bump, the ship being a mile and a hajffroni shore. It was clear, and in his opinion the ship struck a submerged object. ' Alexander W. Bethune, Government surveyor,, said, from the nature of the damage, h!« belief was that the ship struck a spit of some kind. The inquiry was then adjourned to Juno 2G.
