EASTBOURNE AFFAIRS

The fortnightly meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council was ;held on I'ridoy evening, and was attended 'by Councillors Pilchcr, Foley, Morris,' Russell, Cook, Preston, Levi, and Macphereon. (The Mayor was indisposed.) It was' decided, to ake action against a ccrtain property-owner for ,failing to abate a nuisance, and to carry out certain improvements recommended by the Health Department. Two requests, signed by several ratepayers, for footpaths oil tho eastern side of-Main Road and western side of Orua Road, were considered. It was decided not to accede,to them, but,-to give each of the property-owners - concerned reasonable access to tlioir respective properties. .A letter was received on,beholt. of a proposed Croquet Club; -asking if'' the" council would do anything in the direction of forming a suitable croquet lawn on the recreation ground. It was decided to refer the letter to the Works Committee to report. Attention was again drawn to the sanddrift evil on the foreshore between Kauri and Konini Streets. The opinion was ex-, pressed that- any measure to cope with the trouble would be ineffective so long as the public had access to the areas affected. It was 'ultimately ' decidod to plant the area in question with maTram grass.

An application was received from Mr. G. F. Sievers for an increase in ' the bus subsidy for the enusing term. It was decided to renew the contract for a further twelve months, and to increase the subsidy to £50. The Town Clerk was directed to servo notico on all property owners whose hedges'.and trees encroached on the footpaths, requesting them to have same cut back to the fcnco line. > The Town Clerk reported that he had received information regarding the breaking of several street' lamps recently, and the matter fas being investigated. It was decided to prosecute a builder for an infringement of the building . by-laws. . The Toiv'n Clerk was/instructed to take action against the owners of all unregistered dogs, and to advertise that all unregistered dogs found in the borough afer June 30 would be destroyed.
