SHIPS SUNK ON BOTE SIDES STIRRING DETAILS ' BATTLE THAT RAGED DAY AND NIGHT . ' GERMANS FLEE FROM BRITISH ■ BATTLESHIPS ; RESULTS ANALYSED i '.v The greatest naval battle of. tlie war was fought oh Wednesday lost in the North Sea. The German High Seas Fleet left its ports and steamed north towards the Skager Rack. It was brought to action by British battle-cruisers and lighter ships in the fading light of a misty afternoon. In the running fight which followed the Germans made south for their ports, not awaiting the arrival of the British battle squad rons which were racing to the scene of action. The respective losses in ships are set out in detail below. They were heavy on both sides, but German claims to a victory aro made ridiculous by the fact that the enemy ships fled to their ports before the approach of the more powerful British units. A Tising fury of battle is reported at Verdun, where the Germans are assaulting incessantly and with poor success, in a desperate effort, as it is believed, to delay or postpone an Allied offensive. Heavy fighting is reported also on the British front.
